West Coast Plated .45 OAL

Hello All:

After years of using nothing but 200 grain LSWC in .45 ACP, I thought I'd give the West Coast 200 SWC a try. I've always used a 1.250" OAL with great success in my .45's and was wondering from those of you who have used them whether the same would hold with the plated bullets. They look like they have a shorter base.

I shoot 200gr Copper Plated SWC West Coast Bullets using 4.1gr Clays and COL of 1.230. 1.250 wasn't feeding reliably in my SA Milspec so I went down to 1.240. I think I had one or two jams and tried 1.230 and it works good for me.

I think the important thing is the position of the bullet shoulder above the case mouth, which should be no more than approximately 1/16th".

I recently had serious chambering problems with a box of 200gr SWC bullets, that were sold to me as Rainier bullets.

Closer examination after they refused to feed, revealed that these were some other brand of bullet, with a shorter nose, and wider meplate.

Seating them with the dies set up for Rainier 200gr bullets resulted in the shoulder of the bullets being about 1/8" forward of the case mouth, instead of the 1/16" I get with Rainier bullets seated to an OAL of 1.25".

I had to run that box back through the seating die, and seat them to 1.20", so they would feed properly.

Rather new to 415acp. Ran thru 500 of Ranier's 230gr ball with my S.A. basic black milspec, no problem. Decided to try some 200gr plated SWC from West Coast (ya know, more bullets per pound than 230gr).

Could not get those to feed reliably till I pushed them in to 1.225. This was with some apprehension, as the oal was much shorter than I would have expected from looking at Speer #13 for comparable bullets. Westcoast steadfastly REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY USEFUL ADVICE.
