What’s 22long good for?

I just have to talk my girlfriend Into giving them
to me. They belonged to her dad who sold everything 20yrs ago and she doesn’t want to get rid of them but doesn’t have a use for them. The ammo can was hidden in the house for 20yrs and recently found.

Ah ha, things become clearer now. :D They belong to your girlfriend and she wants to keep them. Take a hint from an old married guy and leave her alone about them. Promote peace and harmony in your relation ship. If she decides to give them to you on her own all's well and good but if not let the issue lie.

You could possibly have mag feed problems since the OAL's are different, but it won't blow up your mark II.

ETA: I should say if the OALs are different. I think a lot of manufacturers (not sure about Winchester) use 22lr cases for 22long, so it may be a moot point. If that's the case then the only difference will be bullet weight.
Was there ever a difference in the cases between 22 long and 22LR?

As far as I know 22 Long and 22 Long Rifle have always used the same case. The long rifle simply has more throat that allows the longer heavier bullets typical of 22 LR. There was a 22 Extra Long. There is also the modern 22 Stinger that uses a longer case but still fits in the 22 Long Rifle chamber.

@mcb is correct, I misspoke above.

The .22 Long and the .22 Long Rifle share an identical case length of 0.595". The overall cartridge length of the .22 Long is about 0.880 and the .22 LR comes in around 0.975 and that is more a matter of bullet style than much else. It has been argued that the .22 Long does not share the accuracy of either the .22 Short or .22 Long Rifle, that according to Cartridges of the World 13th Edition. One interesting fact is originally the 22 Long was a black powder load and its original loading exceeded that of the .22 Long Rifle, I never knew that. :)

Keep the peace and don't pressure a girlfriend about it. It's not worth it and if she wishes to keep them just run with it.

I was in the computer room and opened a drawer for a pen and found a box. I asked if she gave the ammo to her dad and she said he wants nothing to do with it. I mentioned when we found it that I would buy them and she said she wants a 10/22 so she was doing to keep them. It wasn’t until I saw the box said 22long and I told her again I would buy them Because they may not run in a 10/22 and she said we will see and laughed. Her mom says her uncle has her dads guns but uncle says he only has a win lever action left and sold everything else. She says she’s waiting to see what he’s got left before giving ammo away. There is hundreds of rounds of 45,357,44,06,22,38,and some unknown and she won’t get rid of any of it. She’s got a 9 and 357 so that will be used up. I was asking for both of us really because when I shoot my 223 she likes shooting my 22 rifle on the next bench and destroying wood blocks. She’s pretty good at it too.

Doubleh makes a good point. Everything will be better when it is her idea. It's a connection with her father and that's a good thing. If her happiness is your goal, you will both be happy!
Thanks. Not pushing the issue. She shot a half brick of my mini mags and standards last time without me knowing so I figured she could burn these up when she shoots with me and I could have some backup squirrel ammo.

Just marry the gal quick, and make sure that the ammo isn't specified in the pre-Nup,

The long and LR in general use the same case . The long at one time used a lighter bullet weight. Now you can get LR with light bullets. So you seldom see both stocked.
