It is hard to pick a favorite, but if pressed I would probably go with the model 1911A1. Runner up would be the SIG P229. But I am also very fond of my Beretta 92FS and Beretta Cougars.

I really don't have the same feeling for polymer-framed, striker-fired pistols although I have four of them.

Tie between the CZ/Tanfoglio design for overall ergonomics, easy accuracy without requiring super-tight fit, solid reliability, and fairly easy take-down and the 1911/2011 family for awesomeness of trigger and best thumb safety evah.

I sure wish someone would make a large frame CZ/Tanfoglio with the straight trigger pull of a 1911.

Another vote for the1911 for all the reasons Demi-human listed in his "Ode to the 1911". More specifically, the bobtailed Commander version, preferably in 9mm. It's about as sweet shooting of a gun there is, although my CZ's are a very close 2nd.

Colt's .45 Automatic, Beretta 92FS, Sig 226, and the Smith 5906 are all equal to me. Yes the striker fired hipsters have taken over most but once they grow up and listen to their fathers maybe they'll understand the old ways. (Yes, I do own a couple of Glocks and M&PS)

Favorite? 1911

Does it just shoot well for you? Yep
History? Awesome
Aesthetics? The best
Ergonomics? Amazing
Capacity? Eh, ok.
Proprietary chambering? Nah, but .38 super is close enough

Runner up? Glock. Shoots almost as well in my hands with less weight and more capacity, plus I prefer Glock aesthetics to any of the other poly strikers.

Q: What’s your favorite semi auto design, and why?
A: 1911. A design that was so good it is still being produced relatively unchanged after 108 years. It fits, point well, is reliable, and simple.

Does it just shoot well for you? Yes
History? Definitely
Aesthetics? Yup
Ergonomics? Absolutely
Capacity? Not the greatest, but still good
Proprietary chambering? Yes for it's time, but not anymore

Edit: Runner Up? CZ-75

Favorite semi-auto design- 1911 (any pistol that you can build yourself from parts has to count for something!)
Does it shoot well- Very well (especially if it's been tuned by a gunsmith who knows what he's doing)
History- Yes (both in it's worldly accomplishments and on a personal level as well)
Aesthetics- Yes (another check mark in the Plus column)
Ergonomics- Yes (works great with my smaller size hands)
Capacity- Maybe (yes you can go to a double stack mag design but you loose some of the ergonomics)
Proprietary chambering- Yes (works great in .45 as well as .38 Super and 9mm.

My favorite is the HK P7 - as a LH, I appreciate that it is completely ambidextrous, just squeeze the grip and pull the trigger. The fixed barrel seems to always make it shoot more accurately than any other semi I have, including my 1911. If there ever came a day when we were limited to less than 10 rounds, its 8+1 would fill the bill nicely.

I really want a full size poly framed version if Hk would revisit the design. I really liked my P7 PSP.

My favorite is a toss up between my 1911's and my CZ's. My 1911's are my best shooting. But if I had CZ's as expensive and well tuned as my 1911's instead of my regular production model CZ (75BSA and P01) It'd probably be a tie though.

GP35 (Browning Hi-Power)

Does it just shoot well for you? Yes, absolutely.

History? First of the high capacity nines, but personally, the only handgun that I have ever had to point at another human being, it saved my bacon back in 1977.

Aesthetics? One of the best looking pistols ever made.

Ergonomics? With ambi-safety it is perfection.

Capacity? Did I say "First of the high capacity nines"? Yep, originally 13+1 but perfectly reliable with Mec-Gar 15 round mags.

Proprietary chambering? No, but recent history has shown that "nine is fine".

Runner Up? 1911

For the last 30 yrs or so I would have defended the 1911 as the best pistol design - I think I could detail strip it, eyes closed. It shoot good , accurate , looks good and so on.
NOW, about 6 months ago, I got a Sig p320 carry. Shoots and looks good, plus all (most) parts drop in, holds 17 rounds of cheaper ammo and a big plus for being able to change out, -grip frame, barrel, slide, everything except the fire control unit (FCU). Gotta vote best design ever.

I own 9 Glocks ... So I guess Glock for me ..
Why?
1. Simple operation
2. Dependable
3. Different sizes
4. Different Calibers
5. Customer service
6. Aftermarket support
7. Consistentancy in triggers
8. Geraldine Factor "What you see is what you get "
