What’s your vacation gun?

I am like @RETG retired so normally I carry on my travels my 686 with 3" barrel. We have land out in West Texas so when we camp out I make it a point to take my 686 with 6" barrel or the python. I go fishing frequently on weekends down the Texas coast and when I go there I usually carry my Kel-Tec PMR 30 with 25 rounds and 2 extra magazines. Seventy-five rounds of 22 magnum is a lot of fire power . The Kel-Tec weighs less than 19 ounces loaded so carrying inside the waist in my shorts when I am surf fishing does not effect my casting.

I'm retired, so everyday is a vacation. Just some days I spend at home, some days I spend camping up in the mountains or deserts and where those travels are determines the weapon. Example, trailer is packed, and attached to the truck and headed to someplace west of Cody WY; therefore, Beretta .40 and due to this time of the year (hungry bears) a .44 with 300 gr Cor-bons and possibly a 12-gague with 600 gr Brenneke slugs.
And two cans of bear spray.
If you're anywhere near Cody, stop at the Buffalo Bill Firearms Museum. Plan on spending the day!

Same as my everyday carry! But, as we use an RV....there are a few extra “personal” items for additional, perhaps very serious needs! Oh....and a Winchester Defender rests peacefully with the “lap dogs” behind the truck front seats on the rear fold down deck! Other than that.....completely defenseless! ;) memtb

My vacations mostly are road trips to Komifornia. That rules out quiet a few.
We do target shoot everytime with friends and family out there. Usually end up with 3 or 4 guns and it's a hard choice everytime.
Add in I'm not allowed to buy ammo in that state so bring plenty.
I might have been born there but I sure hate California.
My grandpa says it was the greatest state in the Union until the politicians ruined it.

Vacation guns: me- EDC shield 9, + Glock 19 w/ 2 spare mags + H&R partner 12 (normally stays in trunk)
Mrs Fl-NC- EDC LCP + Glock 26 & 1 spare mag (lives in trunk in BOB).

It was my APX Centurion, but I sold that. Probably a Glock 19 unless I end up in a 10 round state or drive through one or whatever.

Easier for my wife to possibly shoot over my carry .45, lightweight, easy to replace and I shoot it fine. Easy to conceal even on the beach (I don't swim and don't take my shirt off).

I remember buying the S&W MP15 with the button hole mag release so that I would be compliant in California. When I bought it, my RV was being built and was about 3 months behind schedule as it was a custom built. By the time I got my RV, California had changed the laws and my AR was no longer compliant. So I drilled out the button hole mag release and put in a regular one.

I purchased a cheap Rossi .357 lever-gun and put it through its paces to smooth out the action and make sure everything functioned. I shot 350 rounds through it without a problem. It is my back up to my 686 and another Rossi revolver in .357 only when I travel to California. Laws are so weird now that I do not know how many rounds I can take with me. I probably will stop going to California now. Wife won't be happy as she wanted to see all the national parks there but to me it is just not worth the hassles.

Currently...

A non-resident of CA can legally bring any amount of non-prohibited ammo to CA for personal use.

CA prohibited ammo = explosive, incendiary, tracer, flechette, and handgun armor piercing.

I travel with the same carry gun no matter where I go unless there is a specific reason to need something else. For example if I'm traveling for hunting I'll take along whatever rifle or shotguns I need, or if I'm in a wilderness area for a back country trip my handgun might change. Other than that I'm not going to change it up just because I'm out of town. None of my guns are so expensive that I'm going to carry something less expensive just because I might lose it somehow.

... I’m leaning towards the Miroku Liberty Chief (6 shot 38 the size of my charter but with a fat cylinder)...

I’ve read thru all the posts, and regardless of all the information, I’m just impressed with the mention of the Miroku .38 revolver!!

Although not highly valued and - as I understand it - a product of dubious manufacturing & licensing practices from a respectable Japanese firearms company, I have a Miroku revolver that I do enjoy shooting.

Vacation is precisely why I bought a gen4 G23 (which now sees far more holster time).

Thanks for the update!

My family will soon be singin that ol’ Willie Nelson song about makin music with our friends, so I’m giving some thought to what will go beach cruising. Normally that means I pack it in luggage and it stays in the room the whole trip so a high cap full sized gun goes. This trip is different. The whole trip including travel-through states has laws allowing permitless carry in the vehicle. So the gun rides in the console and will pull nighstand duty as well. Except for the day we visit the DOD property it will migrate with us. So, what do I take? The g42? S&W 30-1 ? Charter undercover? I’m leaning towards the Miroku Liberty Chief (6 shot 38 the size of my charter but with a fat cylinder). Not considering shotgun or AR this time, or anything too big or clumsy for the console.

What’s your vacation gun? Is it your daily carry? Something special?
The wife always carries her 9mm Shield. I bounce between my mp40c, Taurus spectrum, and taurus 85UL.
Lately the 85 gets a lot of action.
Our vacations don't involve anti gun places.
Drinking is limited to a few at home or where we're staying.

I favor a revolver for travel.

I don't like to leave the gun in the car /hotel. So it needs to be with me. I'm talking reciprocity states.

Usually, a 642. Wife has her 380.

I might jump up a few ounces to a 357 snub, for ammo reciprocity. Happened on a gander mountain with hundreds of boxes of magtech 357 jhp for 22/50. Just had the 642, and while I still grabbed a few it would've been nice to be able to shoot them in the weapon I had along while at the family's land.

Wait... I need to buy vacation guns?
One for the mountains, one for the beach.
Hold on, I already live at the beach.
So, just one vacation gun.
Am I doing this right?

I was mocked a bit for choosing extra firepower to bring on my 3400-mile road trip to the Mexican border and back.

I brought my daily carry pistol, the Sig P365, and then an Extar EP-9...

The Extar came in handy when I stumbled upon a terrorist training camp near the border...

We just did a four day weekend road trip from Denver Metro to Dallas Metro. Travel weapons were my 12 ga Mossberg Cruiser with 17 rounds of Federal #4 Buck, West German P220 with 25 rounds of American Eagle 230 gr FMJ, and my old NAA Mini .22 Mag with 5 rounds of CCI 40 gr FMJ.

Pocket, LCPII or Kimber Micro. Console, 2 3/4" Ruger Security Six. Trunk, 29-2, 6".

My vacations consist of camping out in the bush.
My wife and I have been retired for a while now, so "vacation" is not really a good name for what we are doing when we're away from home. However, like you, our so called "vacations" have usually consisted of "camping out in the bush," and the guns we take along are the ones that we deem appropriate for that - sometimes "camping out in the bush" coincides with hunting trips.
On the other hand, on the rare occasions we've stayed in motels when we were on "vacation," my 1911, .45ACP is/was on the nightstand beside the bed - just like at home. And we don't go on "vacation" these days where we can't wear our regular EDC guns.;)

Interesting thread.

I used to have a beater 30-30 I would throw in my truck when I left town. But I sold it because it was terribly inaccurate. So much so that I warned the guy I sold it too.

I generally do not carry a gun unless I am traveling out of town, so maybe once or twice a week, and that is a J frame S&W 38 in my front left pocket.

Now that I think about it, I meant to replace that 30-30 but never did. I need a good beater truck gun.
