An old friend called me last night, asked me what 5 Guns I would have if I could only have 5. A lot of it comes to caliber, I can’t figure out what to give up for a .22 but my choice is final. As market forces have dictated, I consider a .223 the 21st century .22. Most of these I own. This has likely been asked before, but like our personalities flow, market forces are subject to change.

I also am curious what people have, like and or hunt.

1. .357 Ruger Gp100 with a six inch barrel.
2. Sig p229 .40 caliber
3. Colt AR 15 carbine
4. Remington 870 wingmaster 12 gauge
5.Bolt action chambered in .300 weatherby

What about you?

Well I can say three are a rifle, pistol and shotgun. So that’s my foundation. And actually I’d have two pistols as my answer to the 9mm vs 45 argument is yes.so that’s really 4.
I like ARs so my rifle would be one. Pistols would be 9mm and 45
I like the Remington 870. But any clone or a Mossy in 12 ga is ok.

So the question would be should the last gun be a 22 or a longer range rifle. To that I’d say it would depend on ones needs.

A Vierling in 12x12x.30-06x.223; this would take care of most hunting needs; An LWRC M6; An 870 Tactical with several barrels, A 1911, and an LCW Pocket Rifle.

I don't hunt anything bigger than grouse or rabbits, and long-range shooting doesn't appeal to me (I think it's just as challenging/satisfying to shoot standing at 25 yards as it is to shoot 200 or 300 yards off a rest).

I only "need" 4:

1. Glock 42 380 (concealed carry)
2. Ruger Blackhawk SA revolver, 357 Magnum, 4-5/8" (target shooting)
3. Ruger 10/22 rifle (25 yard target shooting / small game)
4. Glock 19 (just in case)
5.

I've owned guns for decades, and right now I have exactly 7.

Glock 19
Marlin 60 (or 10/22 really)
Mossberg 500 with several barrels and chokes
AR 15 - red dot pinned 14.5"
Tikka T3 SS Lite - 7mm-08 or more powerful

So you never hunt with a gauge?

1) my 10/22 Target
2) my Ruger MkII pistol
3) my Colt Combat Commander
4) my Mossy 500
5) my Ruger M77 .270

I think that collection would let me accomplish everything I can imagine needing too do with a weapon, with reasonable convenience. I can teach, hunt, target shoot, and uphold my Constitutional responsibilities fairly well. Everything else is gravy.

  1. Armi Jager AP-74 .22LR rifle
  2. Ruger 181- or 182-Series Mini-14 (with Choate after-market pistol grip stock)
  3. Mossberg 500 (or 590) 12 ga. shotgun
  4. Savage Axis in 308 Winchester
  5. M1911 style 45 ACP pistol.
Except for the fact I have a 12 ga. Browning Auto 5, this is pretty much what I have now.

Not anymore. I sold my Remington 11-87 this year and now it's all 22LR for hunting. I like getting a lot of use out of a few guns.

I respect that. The rabbits around here are usually deep under brush and visible for mili seconds. I only saw one Grouse and I thought it was a Goblin.

1. Sharps 45/70 will handle anything in North America and a great long distance shooter.
2. Winchester 30/30
3. Remington 870 shotgun
4. Ruger 10/22
5. Kel-Tec PMR30 this will be my CCW. I load 28 rounds in the magazine have never had issues with FTF's or FTE's .

Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum 4"
S&W 69 .44 Magnum 4"
Mossberg 930 Semi Auto 12 ga.
Ruger GP 100 .357 Magnum MC 4.2"
S&W 686-6 .357 Magnum 4.2"

1. Glock 17L with a TLR-1 HL (carry piece)
2. Rem 870 12ga. (Gratuitous do all shotty)
3. Ruger GP-100 6" 357 (multipurpose mild to wild 38 & 357's)
4. AR-15 223 (nuff said)
5. Marlin mod 60 ( it just works and does anything asked of it precisely)

All these I have and am proficient with, and have mags & ammo for. With my eyesight and abilities I'm good for 300+_ yards and in. I have friends to cover 300 and beyond for me.

S&W 629 .44 Mag with 4" barrel.
Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge. Since I can only have the gun, but they come with extra barrels, a 20" rifle-sight cylinder and a 26" VR w/Rem chokes.
Glock 19 9mm.
Ruger Mk III 6.5" bull barrel .22lr
Winchester M 70 featherweight in .30-06.

A rather vanilla list, but they'll do just about anything I could ever imagine.

I'll go generic in my answers. Lots of brands are suitable for my purposes. I think mostly in terms of "what's it for?"

  • Concealed carry handgun. In my circumstances, I need something discrete. A .38 snub or a small 9mm or .380 polypistol will do here. I prefer the .38 due to long acquaintance.
  • Fighting shotgun. Could be a pump or a reliable autoloader. 12 gauge suits me; 20 is certainly in the realm of the practical, too. In my opinion, defense of home and hearth is still best managed with a shotgun. For bonus points, you can add a choked long barrel for birds and bunnies and a rifled barrel to launch slugs at deer and pigs.
  • A .22 rifle, for not to have one seems somehow un-American.
  • A general-purpose rifle. You can debate just what that is, but I mean some sort of versatile centerfire that will manage more or less for a wide variety of uses. The scout rifle is an attempt at that, but some maintain that better solutions now exist.
  • Lastly, though surely not leastly, a gun that you own simply because it appeals to you and because it is cool.
Of course your list will look different, maybe even be longer, if you go in for some specialized shooting interest such as biathlon or clays or F Class, where the nature of the contest influences the details of the equipment.

I have to make 2 lists and I'll explain why later on.

1. My Benelli Super Black Eagle. On top of being a very nice shotgun, this one was a gift and so long as it isn't damaged irreparably or stolen I will be passing it down someday. It works great for hunting, sport shooting, or defensive purposes. But I'd probably get a shorter barrel if I intended to use it as a defensive shotgun.
2. My Colt Python w/ 2" barrel. It was bought new by a relative long ago and I'm the 4th owner, all in the family.
3. A Springfield XDM in .45ACP or 9x19. I really want one of each but there's not enough room on my list . Yeah, I'm upset with SA too but I love the XDM.
4. A nice quality AR15. I spare you all of the details of exactly what that means to me. But I will say that I'd have 4 or 5 uppers all built differently if that isn't breaking the rules for this thread. And I'd definitely have a .22lr conversion for it. If I can't at least have the .22lr conversion then I don't want to play this game....
5. A nice bolt action in 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, or .308 Win. I'm thinking a Ruger RPR or a Savage BA Stealth Evolution or Ashbury Precision model. The biggest thing I ever plan to hunt is Elk and I may never even do that considering they aren't common in Kansas.

My second list is made as though I don't have firearms that are irreplaceable due to sentimental value.
1. A Mossberg 590A1. I absolutely love my Benelli but for an ALL purpose shotgun I'd rather have a pump action. Hmmmm, maybe a Benelli M4 instead. I'll have to flip a coin for this one.
2. Ruger GP100 SS .357 w/ 4" barrel. Very accurate, powerful for a handgun, pretty smooth (but heavy) trigger in double action, and built like a tank. Great ALL purpose revolver. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for hunting or OWB concealed carry. And it's damn fun at the range whether you like big booming .357mag or powderpuff .38spl.
3, 4, and 5 are the same as the above list. But if I couldn't have several uppers and/or a .22lr conversion for the AR, I would choose an AR with a .223rem upper built to my liking.

A "five gun list" is really a brag thread about what we own. This started a while back, I believe even before the internet, to churn sales among shooters who seemed to concentrate on just one or two of the five. Note carefully it's usually a revolver, pistol, deer rifle, shotgun, and .22.

Reality intrudes in our life, however, and when you find your recreational time limited, many still narrow things down to the guns that are important, not which qualify for a fantasy list of "life" guns. A CCW pistol and deer carbine are my top two. I haven't seen the need to own a revolver since the 1911 pretty much superceded it in usefulness before I was even born. Shotguns aren't my cup of tea - birds and gunning on ranges are expensive up scale hobbies here beyond my reach. And I haven't shot my .22 in over ten years. The first two guns get priority at the range, more important things come first.

I would suggest that the CCW and deer carbine are about all you need - the range of application is broad and it's about all our pioneers used, albeit the large field knife served for personal protection better until metallic cartridges made the handgun serviceable. I'd say these days it's about what I see in most EDC collections - knife and gun are what are carried for defense with the long arm near at hand.

Five guns are a luxury for those who have the disposable income and time to enjoy them. And I see gun writers are still beating that drum to generate sales for their paying sponsors.

1) Colt Government .45 with a .22 conversion.
2) Colt AR15 with a .22 conversion.
3) Maverick Model 88 12 gauge with extra barrels.
4) Browning Hi-Power 9mm.
5) S&W Model 686 .357 Magnum.

I like these threads. Interesting to see everyone's priorities.

1. Ar 15 in 5.56 with 22lr conversion kit

2. Remmy 870 with 18" barrel, 26" barrel with screw chokes, rifled slug barrel

3. Ruger lcp II 380

4. Savage 110 30-06 stainless

5. Glock 19 with 22 conversion kit.

No one said we couldn't have accessories

Odd, I only own two of the five I listed, and am unlikely to ever own the other three. Not sure if the first even exists, though the craftsmen at Ferlach could certianly do so for a hefty sum. I think of these lists as more of "what if I won the lottery...." daydreaming. Fun bubblegum for the mind.
