i want a rifle in 308, with accuracy and reliablity in mind. it can be a bolt, semi, or single shot. i would also like it to be able to have iron sights at the same time as a scope. the limit is about $500.

what about one in 223?

I've been looking for the same thing, except in .30-06. The only one I can find that has iron sights and is tapped for a scope is this: Browning BAR Lightweight Stalker

It may be a little out of your budget, though. I know I'm going to be hard pressed to get one before deer season begins.

I am a gun dealer and I would recomend a Savage model 110 (wood stock ) or 111 (synthetic stock). Those Rifles will keep you in the $500.00 +/- range depending on where you buy.

Guitargod1985, i like the BAR but yes its a bit out of my price range.

Il Duca, the siaga isnt very accurate from what iv heard.

what kind of accuracy do CETME's offer?

of the options so far the Savage 110 looks best, and i might be able to afford a 223 and a 308. how durable are the Savage's?

On Mossberg's website they list a .308 Bolt-Action with iron sights. They run right around $300 or less, then use the rest for a scope.

I've never seen on at the store though, it might be a special order.

I have one of the 100ATR's in .270 that has been a great rifle. The only complaint that I had was my own fault, I didn'y listen to everybody here and bought the "package" that came with the scope........lesson learned I replaced the "factory" scope with some nice glass and installed a a bipod, my best paper has been a little less than .75", it is consitantly around an inch with Federal 130gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.

Dont bother with the cetme, you cannot shoot comercial .308 in a 7.62 nato. So unless you plan on stocking up on 7.62 surplus (that is getting hard to find and getting very expensive) stick with something newer like a rem. moss. etc. And I know some idiot will chime in a say he shoots comercial ammo in his cetme all the time but he will change his mind about doing that when he hears the kaboom and his face is gone!!!

In reguards to the $300.00 Mosberg, you get what you pay for. If acuracy is a concideration, spend the extra money for a proven rifle,ie Remington,Savage,Ruger etc. My father had a Savage 110 that I bought for him Christmas '73. I have since enherited the rifle and it shoots as well as it did in '73.dad hunted with it every year untill '92. Very drable and acurate rifle!

Not Always, in the case of the Mossberg ATR, you get a whole lot more...

Every article I've read and from personal experience says the Mossbergs are extremely accurate. I also have a Remington CDL in .30-06, it is a great gun, used to be my dad's, but, I'd hate to go climbing up some rocks with it, I'd be afraid of damaging the stock, that's why I bought the Mossberg, to be a "beater" rifle, but to my surprise it's as accurate if not more so that the Remington.

The simple answer to your quest is the Savage 110. Followed by a new stainless Hawkeye M-77 Ruger.

That is the best you can do at your price point.

1. CZ-550
2. Savage - any 10 or 110... Though from a cursory check of their web site it looks like their whole line has changed and I'm way out of date. Still - right out of the box there are few rifles more accurate with out some gunsmithing done to them.

the Remington 700 is a bit outa my price range, and iv heard some bad things about the Remington 710 so guess remington is out unless i can find a good used 700.

i like the looks of the Savage 110, Mossberg 100, Ruger M77 so far. which one of these is more likely to handle a wide range of factory loads (weights) and handle the occasional surplus when i find a good deal? i dont reload (yet) so i have to stick with factory ammunition for now.

All of 'em - even - :barf: the Ruger.

That said you really need to do yourself a favor and drop over to www.cz-usa.com and take a look at the CZ-550. It's set trigger is every bit as good as Savage's accutrigger and way better than that on the :barf: Ruger and the Mossberg. It has a way stronger stock than the one on the Savage and IMO is better built than the Mossberg and the :barf: Ruger. Of all those mentioned it is almost as accurate out of the box as the Savage (maybe just as accurate) and more accurate than the Mossberg and :barf: Ruger. In addition the CZ-550 comes in a wide variety of models from which to choose that which fits you best.

No - I don't own stock in CZ. I just think they are the best bang for the buck out there.

The :barf: ruger has a new trigger on the Hawkeye models and it is pretty good. A vast improvement form the old M-77.

i like cz's but their a bit pricy.

just when i think i have it narrowed down, someone comes along something new and interesting, heh. what kinda accuracy can be expected from the 7600?

Try a heavy barreled Remington 700. That may be just over you're $500 limit, but it's worth it. If you find factory match ammo it likes it will shoot .5 to .75 MOA. If you hand load it should be pretty easy to get it under 1/2 inch at 100 yds.

If you can't find a deal on a Remington, I hear Savages are pretty accurate for the money.
