What are some good muzzleloader bullets for hunting?

I run 325 .458 FTX out of my savage, and used them in my .458 Socom (which is a closer approximation in velocity) and have been quite happy. I also used the 300gr Nosler muzzleloader bullet out of my .458 and found thet to be perform very well when launched at 1900ish fps.

I didn't know savage makes muzzleloaders, any idea when they started?

Late 90s or so i think they came out with the 10ML, mine is from 2000+ tho....10ML-II
Both were/are capable of handling smokeless charges, tho the original design was probably better.
They have been discontinued for a while now.

Hmm that's interesting both me and my dad love savage rifles. I'm gonna have to look them up and see what they look like. I've never heard of a muzzleloader using smokeless powder

I think the savages were the only factory available option that was smokeless..... There are quite a few custom and semi-custom smokeless guns out there.

There have been a number of complaints, and from what ive read there is an issue with flame cutting of a worn breachplug ...i keep an eye on mine but otherwise so good so far.

The customs have a better reputation, tho there are far fewer and they are far more expensive

I think think think… Gunwerks may make one currently… but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Varies by state. Many times black powder/equivelNt is the criteria. PA has their flintlock only season. Just one example I can think of.
Yeah I get what you mean now. Wasn't thinking about it being able to shoot smokeless powder.

There’s an eccentric gunsmith in my area that makes them . A friend of mine bought one . I believe it was about $2000 dollars . He said that with the scope that he has he can hit a target at 400 yards . He asked me if I had a place 400 yards at my house . I told him that I probably do , but he hasn’t brought the rifle yet . I would like a smokeless muzzleloader , but I won’t spend that much for one and they are probably a lot more now because this was about 5 years ago that he bought his .

Yeah I'd never spend that much on a gun. Plus where I hunt I would never get a shot past 200 yards

I think you kept the best out of the 3
The other 2 just sat in the safe every hunting season and my safe was getting full .

I kept the easiest one to use , easier to scope , easier to clean and I don’t worry about pulling it up and down in a treestand and scratching it up .

My Accura has had a few hangfires using BH-209 . Mine is the 1st model and there is no BH-209 breech plug for it . It has never had one using T-7 pellets , or powder .

I agree the wood and brown muzzlleloaders are a lot more pretty than a synthetic inline , but I just use them for a 2 week earlier start to deer season . I don’t care about the tradition of them and IMO , if they are percussion and not flintlock you have lost some the tradition of it anyway .
