What are some must have guns?

Marlin 336 (or any other 30-30 Lever gun),12GA Pump,22 rifle & and a good accurate 22 pistol, a good bolt action rifle for long range work(plenty of good ones in just as many chamberings out there) and a good larger caliber (.357 or bigger) handgun.Makes for a good start to a well rounded collection.

CZ 452 Lux remains one of my all-time favorite firearms.

I think everyone needs a flintlock, too. Load with real black and you'll see what shooting is really all about.

Any 22LR. You can fight over which one, but in the end it doesn't matter - the marksmanship practice you get for pennies on the dollar will dwarf the effect that the brand/model rifle will. Pick your favorite 10/22, 795, 597, single shot bolt rifle, etc.

Garand certainly fall within the category, IMO. They're great rifles with a great history, and they're fun as hell to shoot.

So, for self defense / concealed carry, a pistol chambered for at least .45 cal and capable of 3" groups at 25 feet. Personnaly, I'm short and fat so I settle for a 9mm compact semi-auto - bigger guns holstered are too uncomfortable for me to carry, concealed or open carry.

Must have for home defense, a revolver in good condition near the bed which you use until you can get to your trusty 12 gauge shotgun.

Must have any gun you are willing to take to a range and practice with - whatever is fun to shoot, but most folks I think are right to say a 22 rimfire just because the ammo is cheaper.

But a 9mm is not "at least .45 cal"...

If your revolver is just to get to your shotgun, why isn't the shotgun your must have? And why can't that role be filled with your semi auto from above? Better yet, why not cut out the middleman and just keep the shotgun by your bed?

centerfire rifle, bolt - wishlist

but if you're talking just certain guns that everyone should own at least once in their lifetime, I would go for the classic pieces that changed history/made firearms what they are today: SAA, Winchester Repeater, M1 Garand, Colt Python, 1911, Luger P-08, Ruger 22Mk1,Glock, Desert Eagle

Iconic guns or types of guns, guess it depends on the perspective.

Ironclad asks good question and makes good points. So here's my reasoning:
If an intruder in your home hears the pump action from your shotgun they are more likely to leave. But if I have to clear invaders out of my home room to room, I'd rather use a handgun. If you'd agree that a revolver is not as prone to mis-fires, jamming, etc., that is my reasoning for the most reliable, simpler to use weapon in a near panic situation. Semi-autos for concealed carry because they are typically slimmer in profile.

Yes, I know and my next acquisition will definitely be a .45 handgun! When I bought my CZ75 compact I also bought a Kel Tec Sub2000, 9mm folding carbine. The salesman asked me why did I not get a Glock so the Glock and Sub2000 cold both use the same magazine? I just prefer the weight and the feel of the all metal CZ. But both of my guns shoot 9mm so together they make two "must have" guns for a Bug Out Bag.

There is no such thing as a must have gun model. Reading every post on this so far I went 5 posts without finding a gun I either owned or would want to own and I think I'm about 5% of guns on this list. Just because you want something and like it does not make it must have. Must have for me is a reliable handgun that you can carry everyday all day. A shotgun you can use for home defense and a rifle in a decent caliber that is good for at least 200 yards. Aside from that its all individual need and preference. Saying someone must have a 1911 for example is BS of the highest order. There are millions of gun owners who have somehow managed to get by without one just fine.

One shotgun. Mine's an 870.

One centerfire rifle. Mine's a Remington 700 in 30-06.
One .22LR handgun. Mine is a Ruger MkII.
One centerfire pistol. Mine is a 1911.

I agree with the SD pistol crowd for MUST HAVE. I can no longer hunt so my desires have changed over the last ten years. Although I can hunt anything on the continent with the guns I own. If I were rich my must have gunS for my library would be a high end Parker sxs, a classic full stock Sako or Mannlicher, and fifty other really high end guns because I consider them a work of art and something I can enjoy as a work of art. In the meantime I am pretty sure that what I have purchased and still own were must haves.

Hmmmm, "Must have". Well, if you mean the gun that you shoot the most, that gives you the most satisfaction, that could be used to save your bacon (in more ways than one), will last several lifetimes, and is a work of art, for me that would be a quality over-and-under shotgun (pick your fav gauge). Nothing like breaking open the action, dropping a couple shotgun shells in, closing the action, calling "PULL", powdering a couple clay targets zipping through the crisp sunlit morning air, breaking open the action, ejecting the fragrant still-smoking spent shells, repeating ad-infinitum for the next hour or so, and then breaking the whole mechanism down in 30 seconds for a quick clean and polish to get ready for the next session at your earliest convenience. This to me is a very primitively satisfying shooting experience--even just handling a quality O/U shotgun is special. Not cheap, but the cost per shot in satisfaction achieved is very reasonable IMHO.

"None." It is all a matter of personal wants and needs. It's different for each gun owner. What guy 'A' absolutely 'must have' may do me no good at all. What guy 'B' must have may seem ridiculous to me. And vice-versa.

Decide what YOU need, and get it and practice with it.

To the above post up a few that was concerned about a pump action being less reliable than a revolver...wow. I have never had a pump malfunction that wasn't from operator error.

For a list, I'd go with a .22 of some kind, revolver, auto pistol, lever rifle, or auto rifle. Then a 12 gauge pump, 870, Benelli Nova, or Winchester. .30 cal rifle in an American caliber, 30-06 or .308 or 30-30. Centerfire auto pistol in 9mm, 40 or 45.

Okay well a must have for me is a 92fs or M9 and a 1911, also S&W M19 looks nice.

Must-haves would be types, not models, unless one is afflicted with gun lust (which is a malady I completely understand.) What model depends on preference and affordability.
Necessities
1) .22 rf rifle
2) 12 ga. - Pump is preferable, but dbl works.
3) defensive handgun
4) CF rifle (anything from a M-N on up)
If you can afford it
1) mil clone .223 autoloader
2) mil clone .30 - auto preferred, bolt better than nothing
3) concealed carry handgun
4) scoped CF rifle - .30 or better
Ammo availabiity
Good: If Walmart has it - .22rf, 38 Spl, 9X19mm, .45 ACP, 12 Ga, .223/5.56, .308/7.62X51, .30-06, .30-30.
Not so good: limited availability - .22 Savage High power, 8X56 Hungarian, 14 Ga, 7X61 S&H, etc. May be ballistically dandy, but without ammo an elegant club.
