And where to order/buy them online?

With all the made in USA AK 47 these days, it is hard to know what are the better ones?

Milled vs stamped, different furniture etc etc.

Is Arsenal still considered one of the good ones? Do they still retool imported receivers ? It's all so confusing.

Not trying for a brand war, just what are good things to look for. Some of those milled ones are pretty darn heavy.

Seems most of the upper end ones are at least $1K

These have a good repetition from the folks that I know with them.

Not typical cheap AK, might be out of your budget but they are good.

.

Well I guess I asked:D Perhaps just a but above and beyond what I need or can afford, Certainly look top of the line however.

Perhaps a level lower than the custom guys.;)

I am not a AK guy but ended up buying the new IWI Galil Ace !!! Best AK variant ( 762x39) money can buy ...by far 1abdb5588770719e539e2021d3b16aa3.jpg 6b3e4013828a6e75374dd01cc033bbcc.jpg

Probably the most common higher end AK's are going to be those from Arsenal. If I was getting the one AK that I was planning on having forever and I was buying new, I would buy a Arsenal SAM7. Milled guns may be a bit heavier, but they are the smoothest shooting and will last you the rest of your life.

Heck the rifle will out last me!:D

Yes, it would probably be New as there are not many used ones around here. People are holding on to them. I like the "traditional look but even some Polymer furniture is OK with me.

There are some Century C39 with all US parts Magpul furniture that are nice but really do not "say" AK 47

For a decent selection of AKs you might want to check out Atlantic Firearms website.

Vepr.

you can buy them for 699-850$ from kavar... caliber for caliber Id run one against any arsenal

It's hard to make an argument against the new Galils. Other than those, milled Arsenal, then stamped Arsenal.

My understanding is that Arsenal imports the rough receivers and does finish machining in the US.

Ive got an SLR 107fr right now that is getting nearly all the possible accuracy out of wolf ammo. Scoped I am hitting a 6" diameter plate at 200 yd. 5 times in a row. About the best you can do. I had two Sig 556R rifles that couldnt do that. That is with the brake and cleaning rod.

What do you think is a better AR:

Option 1 -A $700 NIB factory Colt 6920 with ridiculous looking AWB furniture, knowing that you can replace the rail, stock and trigger with whatever you want.

-- or --

Option 2- A $1,000 -$1,400 semi-custom AR from a shop that generally makes good stuff, but uses a variety of component suppliers so you are not always sure where the receiver and barrel come from?

If you like Option 1, get a VEPR (In stock at Atlantic Firearms), and pick whichever VEPR stock set you like. The "guts" of the gun -- the receiver, barrel and trunions are all manufactured and put together on a Russian military assembly line - just like a 6920 which is made on the line next to Colt M4's. 47 U.S.C. 922(r) is going to keep scary looking mil-spec rifles from being imported. VEPR's and Saiga's get around this by swapping out furniture.

If you like Option 2, then get an Arsenal. If you want a rifle that looks like a standard AK, someone here the USA needs to put it together. Arsenal has a reputation of doing this well.

NFA Option A third option, if you want to go the NFA route, is to get a Yugo M92 pistol - also made in a cold war factory - and SBR it. Prepper Gun shop has them in stock for $619. Add in $200 for a tax stamp, and another $1-200 for furniture. You will wind up in the same price range as the above options. The M92 is a handy little gun - even in pistol configuration. The downsides are: short sight radius (if using irons), non-chrome lined barrel, and waiting for permission to build it how you want.

Rant Regarding Milled Receivers: I don't see any reason whatsoever for a milled AK receiver unless you want a Vietnam-era retro look. Milled receivers just add weight and expense. If you look at any photos of Russian soldiers in combat in Syria or Ukraine you will see a dimple above the mag well - indicating a stamped receiver:

Milled receivers are for freedom fighters/guerrillas that can't get new stuff, and the affluent casual American shooters that are never going to carry them into combat, but also have billet steel custom machined AR lowers and $2k + 1911s. Nothing wrong with it, but no need for it either.

the accuracy of an AK has little to do with the receiver. barrel whip and distortion from heat is the biggest problem. arsenals, saigas, wasrs all have normal AK thin barrels.

the veprs have much heavier RPk barrels (and recivers and trunions).

also there is no proof that milled receivers last longer. maybe with poorly heat treated stamped recievers but not when everything is buillt to spec.....ether way you have shoot your barrel out several times over, long before you would see a receiver failure.

I'm new to AK's and don't know much about them having just started really shooting my own. But I'd say if you can still find a Saiga at a reasonable price, get it. Great accuracy.

(Ignore the Geco ammo group. Pretty junky ammunition)

I own a wasr (10/63) and love it. At the range recently I've seen 3 different RAS 47's / Century Arms US Made AKs. I traded rifles with one of the owners for a few rounds down range.

From shooting and talking with them, I'd definitely consider one of the Century Arms US Made AK rifles. I still like the wasr's if you can hand pick it (Look it over, there were many really good years of production after a rough start).

I've owned a few AK type rifles and shot some others....and in my opinion, a well built AK rifle will shoot similar and increases in cost are typically cosmetic (Better furniture, bluing, etc).

I HAVE NOT shot a vepr, or a Russian built AK... but would like to. IF any ak rifles were to perform better I'd suspect they might.

*I'd probably rate my AK as the most fun gun of mine to shoot, but in my .02 an average AR is more accurate... But that's not always everything.

The best AK's that came into this country are the Chinese type 56 Norinco & the Polytech Ledgend. The converted Legion 21 Siaga by Arsenal was a good rifle also. Valmets, I used to have 7, were great but the M76 5.56 mags were a problem to find and very expensive. I still have a IMI preban Galil which is also a top notch variant but heavy.

You might do better by asking at a more AK Centric place like AK Forums.net
Look around there for your answers and you'll have access to some real experts who can set you straight.
Be wary of some who might put out a good AK, but have a spotty reputation for getting the customers gun to him they way he wants it and without and extremely long lead time and Q/C and C/S issues.

+1 on this. If you look around they can still be found fairly reasonably. I just picked up a Polytech spiker, a Valmet M76 and a milled MAK90 for very reasonable prices.

Most of these were purchased within the last two years.
