What are these marks for and when did they start using them?

Yup, apparently SIG uses non-proprietary DataMatrix codes.

SO, if anyone is into covering the S/N when they post, start covering your barcodes also.

Ha! Good point!

I think it it is a good idea to hide serial numbers, but I am not entirely sure why.

On a "classic" gun, like a Colt or S&W revolver, I really don't like "modern" markings, whether they be bar codes, instruction manuals, or even the dot matrix serial numbers that are becoming more common. I think Ruger moving their pamphlet to the underside of the barrels was a very good thing.

On something like a Glock, though, I personally couldn't care less.

Many vaguely paranoid "never provide any personal info" stuff, so a lot depends on how sure you are the USG is tracking you, and at some point they will just use the chip in your brain so who cares :)

(I DO tend to hide/obscure the serials for my NFA stuff as that IS on a record somewhere and I am not sure you can't just go look it up, or won't be able to sometime in the future.)

Not sure I have seen a real case but in theory you could also report stolen, then have law-enforcement supported theft of your stuff if bad guys did enough of the right paperwork.

The only legit risks to me are to limit people stealing your actual real world serial for scammy sellers who steal your photos. Don't give those people any damned help.

I’ve seen them, I don’t like them and I wish they would stop doing stupid stuff like that. But I want loose any sleep over it.

I don’t really think many Gun manufacturers care much about what their customers think about such things.

Theirs really no good reason to make it a permanent mark. If it’s cheaper, which I seriously doubt, add 5¢ to the price of the gun and use a removable sticker or tag of some kind. It’s just a big company doing what big companies do, stupid thing the customers don’t like.

It’s enough to make me stop considering the purchase of a new Python, which I was at one point for a few minutes until I remembered they have these.
