What are you shooting at your next range trip?

Man, I see threads on these little Wranglers on every gun forum I visit. I bought one while in the process of finding my wife's "perfect" revolver but I've never shot it. Neither has she since I bought her a Bearcat--it's just sitting in the safe with its wood grips and Wolff hammer spring. I gotta drag this little jewel with me the next time I go shooting. A Wrangler, a Heritage revolving rifle and an NAA Hogleg--that oughta be fun!

When I first saw mention of a Ruger Wrangler, I had to look up what it was. When I found it, I thought: "Why the HECK do they need another SA revolver in 22? They already have the Bearcat for small hands and the Single Six for bigger hands."

I went to a local shop last week and saw them on the rack. They're about the same size as a Single Six, but are priced at $200. Got it; it's a budget cowboy plinker. It costs about the same as a Hi-Point, but seems to be of better quality, and is not likely to be the choice of gang-bangers; a nice compromise by Ruger, I think. I noticed they all seem to have some kind of powdercoat, which makes me wonder about what grade of steel is underneath...

Some have theorized that the Wrangler was Ruger's response to the inexpensive Heritage .22. Can't get a magnum cylinder for a Wrangler, though. It seems to be a practical entry-level single action with a good barrel length.

Back in July, the man at the station to my left had a Bearcat that he occasionally let's out to play. That was a fun looking revolver. I've never tried that model, or a Wrangler.

I did manage to get out at least twice a month this summer. Next up is a rifle with targets at 100 yards.

me choosing what to bring out to shoot is like a dear lady choosing the evening’s handbag and shoes.

at least one 22lr plinker and one centerfire protection piece always make the cut. i just got a s&w shield ez 9mm so it’s been invariably coming along lately in order to reach my 500 round break-in/comfort level. i’ve also brought its ez 380acp little brother, and taurus and s&w 38sp revolver 2nd cousins, all for comparison.

it’s much more difficult when i’m snowbirding, when i’m space-limited to 3-4 handguns. always 1-2 22lr plinkers, a pocket ccw, and something centerfire & bigger.

Change of plans. My sister-in-law sent me a text a few nights ago and wants me to teach her sons how to shoot. So it looks like the next range trip will be .22 rifles. Go ahead, twist my arm . . .

The Standard Issue, except that she now carries a red dot.

The Ruger American Rimfire on top has had its scope removed. I think I need to teach the boys about iron sights, too. The 10/22 is the Standard Issue, but the pic was taken before I put the new stock on.

I may also take a couple of pistols, but I only have a picture of one:

I know this is in Handguns, and my post is mostly rifles, but hey, there's a handgun in the mix!

Tomorrow, the Mrs. and I will go to the local indoor range.

Here’s what we’ll be taking:
<snip>

From the top, the Springfield XD-45 Tactical. It’s pretty new, probably only 100 rounds have been through it. Tomorrow will be the first time with reloads. (200 gr. flat points and 5.3 gr. of Win231)

Next is my first and favorite, the Ruger Mk. II Target, just cleaned and hopefully extracting reliably now. I may put a red dot back on it; we’ll see.

The next one down is my S&W 19, with its tuned trigger. This is the one my wife likes shooting most. I just rolled some nice easy loads for it tonight; 105 gr. hard cast bullets on top of 4.6 gr. of Win231 in Magnum cases.

Lastly, my S&W 625. (45 ACP) I’ve got ten Moon clips loaded with some 200 gr. semi wadcutter plated bullets on top of 5.0 gr. of Win231.

<snip>

Well, it was not as successful a trip as I thought. After a thorough cleaning the trusty old Mk. II Target is still a Jam-O-Matic. I think it needs a new extractor.

The S&W 19 is giving light primer strikes. I think the last guy that worked on it went a bit too light on the hammer spring and I need to look into fixing that too.

The S&W 625 is still great; I have to decide whether to set the sights for SA or DA, as the POIs are quite different. The Springer XD-45 Tactical is great. I love that gun, even though it won't feed SWC bullets.

Not sure what the full lineup will be, but this recent acquisition will definitely be coming along. Already had an unfired one with a very early serial number, but then I found this barely fired, practically NIB example recently for a very nice discount off of retail, so now I have one I can shoot. Will try not to think about how each pull of the trigger is costing me $1.50.

Squirrel Season opener in a week so I will be heading to the range with my 10-22, my MkIV, and my .22WMR rifle. I don’t anticipate any adjustments, they have been rock solid for years but a confidence reality check is always useful.
If I can hit 3 ping pong balls (roughly a squirrel head size target) at 50 yards 3 shots might be all there is to the trip.

Range Trip with Da Nephews is planned. We're going here Saturday morning. The lineup is: (a) Two Ruger American Rimfires; (b) one Ruger 10/22; (c) two 22/45s; (d) one 1911; and maybe (e) Shield Plus.

What is it?

What is it?

It’s the FK BRNO Field Pistol. Shoots the proprietary 7.5 FK round, pushing 95- and 101-grain pills at around 2,000 fps.

The company has also released a polymer-frame version, the PSD, at a much lower price. You can get 10mm and 9mm barrels (and springs) for the polymer version. The original limited-run steel-frame guns don’t accept the conversion barrels.

Here are a couple of articles on the Field Pistol from around the time of its release:

How difficult will it be to buy this ammo?

Not too hard at the moment. FK Brno US usually has some available, and some other places online have it periodically. I see that FK Brno US actually has one particular load going for a mere $1.20 per round at the moment, which I haven't seen before.

I previously bought a bunch of 7.5 FK ammo, just because I can't say with any confidence that it will be available over the long term. At the very least, I'll always replace whatever amount I shoot, for as long as that's possible. As a matter of fact, it's time to add to the stash, given this "bargain" load I just noticed.

Frankenruger red background.jpg I had all intentions of shooting my S&W 617 Sunday for our Steel Challenge match but after practicing Wednesday and having a number of failures to fire I decided to shoot my Black Mamba.

I replaced the firing pin in the 617 but haven't had a chance to test fire it. I know the Mamba is working and I'll be using Norma Tac 22 in it. This ammo is greasy but runs like a charm.

I'm taking a S&W Model 10-5, Model 14-4, and 586, .357 mag. I have some ideas I want to try to improve shooting with fixed sites on the Model 10, my carry gun. I want to remove the Fitz grips on the Model 14 and try conventional grips. (I got extra big hands). And I loaded up some mag loads and just want to feel them and see the diff. in POI with the 586. Am I a S&W guy? No, but that's how things end up. I sold my Trooper to my sister-in-law because she can't pull the slide on a Sig 320 anymore. The money I got for the Trooper went towards the 586, which I now feel was a better buy.

I brought my 3” 357 SP-101 last time. It’s shooting about 4” right at five yards with my powderpuff loads. (4.6 gr. of win231 under a 105 gr. cast bullet)

Next time, I’m gonna try to remember to bring the tiny Allen wrench to adjust the laser grip sight.

Before that though, I need to shoot some of the defense ammo and see where IT hits. That’s more important, I guess.

Took the S&W Model 19-5 with the J. Scott Old Style smooth high gloss grips to the range this morning.

Got to the range first thing and had it all to myself. I really wondered just how controllable the thin smooth J. Scott grips would be. They were fine with the K-22 that went to a Forever Home decades ago but I was concerned that at 38 Special and 38 Special +P control would be difficult. Started out with a five dot target at 5 yards and ran a Z series top to bottom and left to right. Turned out that for SD accuracy all was fine so repeated right to left and bottom to top. Still okay SD patterns.

Did the same at 7 yards and then 10 yards with okay if not as desired results. Nothing to brag about but also nothing embarrassing. But it did become evident that the smooth thin grips are not going to be the answer for regular concealed carry. It's just plain too hot a humid down here most of the year so I will switch out to one of my checkered Magna grips. The old style certainly is easier to conceal and does print less but the Magnas will be close while still slightly wider and slightly more aggressive.

So plan for today is to root through all the grips in the Box of Shame and see how many old K frame Magna grips I can find.

I haven't made up my mind yet but the 1911s haven't been in some time but there is a new 1851 Colt that hasn't been fired yet and----well, I'll figuer it out, probably just before I load up to go. How is that for a run-on sentence?

I’ve got to sight in the new Steve Gunz bolt peep sight on my Rossi 92 .357 magnum.
