I like 5 years old to start, I deff like also showing them the destructive power, say on a piece of fruit, to make them understand how dangerous they are.

Now then, a nice savage remmy, marlin, or cz, youth models are all fantastic, and I know that the marlin, will let you replace with a big boy stock, when they outgrow the smaller one. But they are all great.

I just picked up a Marlin 915Y for my grandkids (ages 5-7). After looking at all the other starter rifles, the Marlin's operating bolt was the smoothest to function. (Wanted something easy for little girls to operate). Safety was simple to maneuver and understand. Other brands featured peeps that were difficult to see through, the Marlin's sights were open and easy to adjust. As a firearm and Hunter Education Instructor I think this rifle is the best put together in form and function. Two thumbs up!
