go to wally world, buy a cheap cleaning kit, a pack of .30 caliber swabs and some rem oil and you'll be set.
great. Thanks for the info. What length rod should I look for or do they all just come with enough sections to fit most every gun? I'm also guessing that you meen a kit with multiple brushes?

as long as you get a good kit with a .30 caliber brush and enough sections to get about 20 inches into the bore, you should be fine. Your average walmart cleaning kit should include about 20 inches of bore sections (them hunting rifles have long barrels), a few bore swabs/patches, a .22 caliber brush (good for scrubbing residue/ carbon buildup), a .30 caliber brush and some other items depending on which you buy. The one I got cost me 15 dollars and came with brushes in .17, .22, .30, .410, 20ga and 12ga as well as enough rods to clean a rifle and a shotgun at the same time.
Some people like to clean with the ram rods from their rifle and cleaning kit but I'd rather use a cheap store bought set that I wont miss when it wears out than mess up the kit that comes with the rifle.
Don't forget to strip the gas tube and clean in there after firing too since a lot of carbon buildup can get in there. SKS's can take a boat load of abuse without cleaning- but why go there? keep your rifle pristine and It will always serve you well.
As far as bore snakes go- I love em! makes cleaning the bore on your rifles a breeze!

So if I can get a .30 cal bore snake + rem oil I will be all set for the bore? I know where I can get these and $15 isn't to bad if it will make cleaning alot simpler and will be less prone to damaging the crown. Oh and are the snakes hard to clean the gunk off of?

I believe you can get that with your bore snake.
I've got a few boresnakes lying around, a trip through the washing machine does a good job.
also- an old toothbrush is a good addition to a cleaning kit. USGI cleaning kits come with them standard which shows how useful they are.
remember that the sooner you get the residue off, the softer it will be and wont be so much trouble. I know that whoever owned my AK before didnt clean it because the gas piston tip was so black that it took a power drill with a wire brush attachment to scrub it off.

Yea the front of my gas piston wouldn't come clean so I took some very very fine sand paper and got it clean. The gas pistion in the yogo I got seems to be stanless steal so it polished up to a mirror finish. I also made good use of a cosmetics brush when removing what little cosmoline was on my gun.
