• Possible Downtime Alert

I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.

When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

More information is available in this thread.

As always, thanks so much for your patience.

What do you guys think of this for a 308?

Always wanted a 308 and I love my Benelli Franchi Momentum in 223. Was wondering about your opinions on this rifle.

Thanks all.

I expect you can speak with more firsthand experience about Franchi Momentum rifles than most of us here.

Seems you’ve enjoyed your 223, and I wouldn’t suggest any reason that you’d find the 308win version to be a different breed. I might not jump up and down to buy a 308 at all, nor especially a 308win in a 22” barrel, but purpose is what it is, and preferences are what they are.

$800 for a well built rifle with an attractive aesthetic isn’t much at risk.

I want precision shooting at long distances. I'm not sure this is a precision rifle.

Are we talking precision hunting or precision competition shooting or both? I think "precision" is mostly a marketing term to sell more rifles at a higher cost. The factors that go into making a rifle repeatably accurate are myriad, but barrel, stock and the joining of those too are most important.

That stock would not be my first choice for a dual purpose long range hunting/target rifle. I'd like to see a comb and length of pull adjustment and the ability to add an ARCA rail or at least MLOK attachment points, something more along the lines of the Springfield Waypoint, Bergara HMR or a stock like the MDT XRS or KRG Bravo stocks.

A stiffer, freefloated or bedded stock will go a long way to improving the accuracy of any rifle. If that Franchi is the one you really like, find as many reviews on it that you can and maybe call Franchi to get some info on the stock and which barrels they use. Good luck.

Research says this is an amazing rifle to shoot for long range target competitions.

Really like the Bergara

The Bergara is a great rifle. I have a few friends with the HMR and some with the higher end Bergaras. They all shoot really well.

300 Winmag is a BIG step up in performance over your 223. A lot more recoil and a lot more cost. Unless you are shooting over 1000 yards regularly, you can get really good performance with a 6.5 Creedmoor or a 6mm Creedmoor for significantly less recoil and cost.

That's the conclusion I drew.

What's better for target shooting for competitions 308 or 300 win

In most rifle competition formats, both 300wm and 308win are at SIGNIFICANT disadvantages. In fact, most forms of rifle competition have handicapped classes specifically for 308win, acknowledging it can’t keep up.

You’ll really have to identify what type of competition you want to play. Even when the same cartridges are used, the rifles used are very, very different.

Also, the 308 is still a very capable target cartridge if you arent trying to push the range too far all the time.

Ive been shooting my 308 a lot more lately. Still getting pretty consistent hits out to 1000+ yards with it. Out past about 700-800 yards the 6.5 Creedmoor starts to really show it's superiority in wind deflection, but the 308 is still trucking along out there.

I recently picked up one of these, but in 6.5CM.

Haven't really had a chance to play with it though.
I have a Bergara BMP. Excellent rifle. I don't think you can go wrong with Bergara. I think there are better caliber options than 300 Win Mag, but that's just me. My Bergara is in 6.5 CR which may be a little anemic for some long distance hunting. For that I'd pick the 6.5 PRC. Ammo isn't as available as the 300 WM, but I think its a better designed offering. In fact, I skipped over the 300 WM and picked up a couple 300 PRC rifles (not Bergara) for my extreme long range target shooting.

For most informal shooters 308 or 6.5 CM are the top choices. For serious competitors there are better options. What makes 308 and 6.5 CM appealing is that suitable rifles, and ammo are available off the shelf and at reasonable prices. For someone wanting to start shooting at ranges beyond 300 yards they are good entry level choices. The 308 works pretty well out to 600-800 yards. It is running out of gas at 1000. The 6.5 gets it done well past 1000.

At one time 300 WM was the leader in long range (1000 yards +) shooting. But all of the accuracy records it set have long ago been surpassed by other cartridges. Where the 300 WM fills a niche is for guys wanting to hunt elk size game at ranges beyond 500 yards. It is accurate enough, shoots flat enough and shoots bullets big enough to kill game that size at those ranges.

I agree with you on the 300 WM, if someone is already invested in the cartridge. But if they are starting fresh, I think there are better (mostly newer) cartridge designs out there that surpass it. The one thing 300 WM has over almost all of the newer cartridge designs is the prevalence and lower cost of 300 WM ammo. That's a pretty big plus. But if I didn't already have a 300 WM, I'd get something else.

Bergara B-14 HMR Blued/Brown Bolt Action Rifle - 300 Winchester Mag

What research - or rather what sources you researched - suggests this?

There is absolutely no competition format where a Bergara B-14 HMR in 300wm is an appropriate choice, let alone “amazing.”

Here is a newly posted video from a YT gun channel taking the Bergara HMR out to over 900 yards. I got my Bergara BMP (Bergara Match Precision) from a PRS shooter going through tough times, and it feels extremely solid and well put together. I've not heard anyone who has one say they wished they got a different brand.

Shooting long range in an uncontrolled format isn’t applicable for competition. Speculating based on YouTube videos doesn’t equate to actual productivity in competition.

The only competition sport for which the Bergaras can be suitable is PRS, and even there, the 300wm is HIGHLY detrimental, as is 308win, and to be blunt, the Bergara isn’t even holding its own in Production Class, let alone playing competitively in Open. Bergara’s aren’t doing anything in Benchrest or F-class, outside of local club play, maybe not even there.

Bergara’s in 300wm CAN BE USED in PRS competition, which is really to say any repeating centerfire rifle in 30 cal or smaller pushing a bullet no faster than 3200fps CAN BE USED in PRS competition. But any 308win and any 300wm are at a distinct disadvantage, and the Bergara’s, even chambered in more appropriate cartridges, aren’t really keeping up in PRS, even in Production Class (no factory brand rifle is).

@MR WICK needs to point out what kind of competition he has in mind, and then more appropriate advice can be given.

Because THIS:

Isn’t built to do the same thing as THIS:

Or to do the same thing as THIS:

80D59C19-4FD1-40AB-85B0-D3AEBB3E51E4.jpeg

And the Bergara only kinda fits ONE of those games, and 300win Mag only kinda fits one other… and only for the guys who might have done a bump of Retumbo up their nose before the flight.
