What do you think is "enough" for mags and how do you store them?

Being a survivor of the Clinton AWB and recalling the then high prices and limited availability of quality pre-ban era magazines. It shaped my buying and storage habits for mags.

I try to keep minimum amount of mags for certain number of guns and I'm always on the hunt for more of 'em when prices are good.

Guns like my Berettas, GLOCKs, ARs, and Minis have a literal pile of magazines. Others likey Luger or VP70, have a bare number of four mags. But the majority of handguns have on average between six to ten mags. My hunting rifles like the BLR and 7600 have two mags each.

They're all tagged and bagged and stored in totes next to the rest of the gun stuff.

Mag storage is something that I need to work on. My M1, M1A and AR mags are stored in my ammo/component closet in boxes marked with a sharpie. My extra pistol mags are haphazardly stored mostly in the safe. Mostly!!! I started marking them but I suppose thats more for who gets this stuff after I'm gone. I've seen where MTM has some plastic boxes for mags that has gotten my interest. Lots of stuff for use in ammo cans, too. We'll see.............!

Number wise, my numbers are similar to yours.

I generally have 10-12 mags for every handgun I have. A couple exceptions like I think I only have 2 for my old Colt Woodsman. For my Tikka hunting rifles I have 2-3 per. The mags somewhat interchange on them, depending on the cartridges involved. I have probably 40-50 AR Mags, just because. I only have two AR's and rarely shoot them as I don't care for the platform all that much. I probably have 200 M1 enbloc clips.

I keep the spares in a tote just like you. I have my working mags in the gun room, also scored in totes. AR mags are in a couple of boxes in my ammo cabinet.

You can never have enough magazines, period.

I am always on the lookout for magazine deals, both new and used. My holy grail magazines these days are S&W 3rd Generation mags for a couple of pistols I have that are safe queens anymore. (Greg Cote is a good source, when he has any).

Glock(and Pmag for Glock are ok), Sig, AR and 1911, here. I store mine much like you do yours.

And I believe in spare RSAs for my pistols and AR too.

Like you, I went through this, going from tables and tables of cheap AR mags to nothing or high priced mags because of the "assault weapons"
legislation. So when it expired, I stocked up when the sales came. I have 70 or 80 thirty rounders and 10 or 20 twenty rounders in cardboard
boxes on the shelf. Gathering dust right now, but that's OK.

I should have sold some mags during the AWB, Glock 20 mags were going for $180/ea, all plastic 50 round 10/22 mags cost more than a new 10/22.

I like at least 10 mags per handgun and at least a standard load out with a chest bag for each rifle, and then pile them on from there as extras.

I keep my handgun mags in zip locks in one of the smaller, lockable tool chests on wheels next to my safe. Mags are as much an investment as the guns. The rifle mags that arent in pouches are kept in tubs.

That old saying….”Guns(magazines) have two enemies….politicians and rust(dust),” comes to mind.

Living in a ban state, I have 10 round mags for the guns that can take them (1911 - 8 rounders). Basically, my paradigm is to have enough for an USPSA or IDPA match, so I don't have to reload during the match. I bought a slew of 10 round Glock mags when the AWB ban expired and 10 rounders were dumped cheap. Keep them in sorted Tupper war like bins.

My standard stock is 2 mags for hunting guns, 5 for handguns and 20 for long guns. Challenges are Beretta 70 series, SIG trailside and CZ 22 rifles. Overstock may occur when good deals are encountered. Stored in pistol bags or web gear.

PS - since I have a PCC, the slew of Glock mags also serves them.

50+ for ARs and same for Glock 9mm's. About a dozen of each in range bags and carry rotation and the rest stored in a tote kind of like OP. Alot of em are new in package

Same.

One thing, when they're dormant like that they don't eat anything.

That's my basic strategy, that ƒ(x)->magazines must equal Σn + 1 at all times.

But, being stingy, I want the best price I can get.

For storing them, they go in the range bags as a general rule (my range bags always have pockets to that end) so that they are always handy when needed most.

Which has not stopped magazines from congregating on my desk, to remind me to grab a couple of the odder balls to drag to gun shows as reminders.

Like GEM, I live in a "ban state" so I can't say what I might or might not have, in terms of caliber, type, or quantities.

Rubbermaids.
I lived through the AWB. Never again will I be caught short if I can help it. I even buy and stock for things that I MAY someday want a gun to use them with.

Because I have an overabundance of different 9mm and .40 cal autoloading handguns, one I only have two mags for but others I have a dozen. Several of them take the same mags. Those are the ones I have more mags for.

AR mags I pick up two or three more every time I'm at the surplus store. I'm probably up to 35 now.

My M1A that I've owned for close to 20 years, I immediately bought ten 20rd mags for along with two 25 rounders, all from CMI.

I need more 10/22 mags, only have seven 10 rounders and two 25 rounders. I prefer using the 10 rounders for their tiny form factor and flush fit, the 25 rounders are still in their blister packs. Would like to have twenty 10 rounders but am not as concerned about them becoming unavailable or illegal any time soon so I'm patiently waiting for good sales.

Generally I will pick up spares for anything I own if the price is right. They don't take much room so why not.
