I have used my T/C 22lr with 2x simmons pistol scope for years but about two years ago I switched to my NAA Mini Master 22 mag.Only because here in East Texas the daily bag limit is 10 and to be honest I usually only see 5 to 7 Squirrels on a good day,and usually bring home 4 or 5.So I figured why carry the bulky heavy guns when the NAA Mini Master gets the job done.

When I lived in town, I went from a .410 SxS to .22lr hp to .22 short hp, to a .177 air rifle in an attempt to keep some greenie in the in the apartments two lots away from getting upset. I had good success with all, except the air rifle. I was dispatching them as vermin. My 70+ yr next door-neighbor trapped them in a home-made wooden rabbit gum, dumped them into a burlap sack, whacked it hard against a tree, and then cooked them in a crock-pot. He said the young ones were tasty, the old ones, not so.

These days, in the sticks, I thin the squirrel population with a 12 ga Winchester Super-X Model 1, 26" bbl, IC choke. #5 lead high-brass bird. Works every time.

12g because my .22 has poor sights and centerfires aren't allowed in state forests. otherwise it'd be the .223

i voted other 22;)mostly use my ruger 22/45 or my 22 savage mark ll,but sometimes i use a ruger mark ll:D
started out many moons ago with a topper jr single shot 410,from age 6 till 10when i got a sears model 200 20ga poly choke(still have both of these guns)then started using a marlin #60 in the late 60's.

Up in the mountains, I hunt quail and squirrel (grays) at the same time, so I carry a shotgun for the birds and a handgun for the squirrels. When I'm just hunting tree rats, I use a Thompson G2 carbine in 17m2.

Depends on the situation.

If there are close to the house and I have to make run a little bit before I take the shot, 12 ga. pump.

If they are in the trees around the house, crack the window and the Marlin 60 with red dot goes to work.

Took my first squirrel this weekend with my Nylon 66. First shot at one even! Nice shot too, right below the ear.

Back in high school my buddies and I would hand load for our deer rifles. I used a bolt action .308 loaded with (if i recall right) 185 gr. hollow point. Not much left of a squirrel, but it did make a neat Christmas tree of the sage brush.

Used a 410, 20g and 16g way back in the late 70s. Then switched to a 22 for a lot of years. Tried a 17hmr...damned barrel harmonics ruined it for me. changing ammo or even buying a box of the same ammo often left me having to readjust my scope, way too annoying. Im not that into playing sniper, I just like to hunt here and there....dont want to make a full time career of it.

Also after not being able to get a few squirrels down off of a branch I decided to switch back to a shotgun...knocks them off every time, most are dead in the air.
Been using a 12g for the last few years, never going back :)

I won't shoot into the air with a rifle.
I voted .410 though I would prefer to use my Ruger 10/22
It's getting harder to find places vast enough to feel comfortable shooting a rifle at an upward angle. But a 1/2 oz load of # 6 from a full choked .410 is a nice compromise. You can still take a head shot with minimal meat damage.

I started with my 10/22 but the bull barrel made it too heavy to carry around, moved to my H&R 17hm2 but that damaged the meat too much. I use a rem 472 22 pump now because it is light and handy or a 16ga SxS if I am hunting upland game at the same time. Thinking maybe this year for the multi game hunting of using a 28ga SxS.

I am going to try a .22LR pistol with some Aguila Super Colibri powder less rounds for the tree rats that found their way into my attic. All based on if I can find them. Otherwise, maybe rat poison will work. I would like to shoot something, though.

Usually a Ruger 77/22 in .22 Magnum that I worked over... 18" Volquartsen Carbon Fiber Tensioned Barrel, Rifle Basix Trigger, light action work and sporting a 2-10 Weaver V Series scope.

...or the ol' CZ 452...Timney Trigger and a 4-16X50mm Burris (an older one) scope.

...I prefer the Ruger 77/22..with 40gr Federal jacketed solids you can't go wrong!

For squirrals and rabbits, I use one of my 10/22's or Marlin 22 Mag. My Dad likes his Ruger single six with 22 shorts. I have to admit, he is pretty damn good with it. My brother likes his Rem 22 rifle.

I use this 10/22 loaded with subsonic hollow points. With that Volquartsen carbon fiber tension barrel it's light, short and utterly handy in the woods. Slung muzzle down, basically the whole thing hangs behind my left arm, out of the way. After some work, it has a nice trigger, and with any decent ammo it shoots well under 1/2" at 50 yards. When I miss, it's my fault not the gun's.

With the subsonic ammo, and not having to move to operate the action between shots, it's often possible to get in a second shot at a stationary squirrel if the first shot misses.
