What does "the ultimate revolver" look like to you, and who makes something close?

A break-top 4" barrel automatic ejector (like a shotgun, not just extractor like a Schofield or Webley) in 10mm, that uses moon clips. (so you'd be able to shoot 40 S&W also, for whatever reason....) It'd have to have a stop to keep the front end from flopping all the way open.

Sort of a smaller version of this:

but where it positively ejects the whole moon clip when opened.
 
I've thought about this for awhile, and I think I've come to a conclusion. Although there is no one right answer, for me the ultimate (though, regrettably I don't have one :( ) would be the S&W L-Comp.
I have over a dozen revolvers, most of which would be quite adequate, but the ABSOLUTE 2 best guns ever made are the last one you traded/sold but shouldn't have, and the next one you're going to get.
 
Something that will take a beating and keep working for a long time. Something simple.

A 4" K-frame with fixed sights would be fine. Or the Ruger or Colt equivalent.

That was the combat revolver for US law enforcement for many decades.

I'm fine with 38 special or 357. I've shot them a whole lot.

If scrounging might be necessary, 9mm would be helpful.

44's and 45's are good. I like them. They make bigger holes in things, but they're heavier to carry around all day, too.
 
I shot a 329PD (Ultralite, scandium frame and titanium cylinder) at the range once with .44 special loads. It was much more controllable than I thought it would be but I don't know how powerful the .44 special loads were. I liked the idea of lite weight carry revolver that can be amped-up to 44 mag should the situation call for it. For my tastes I think .44 special would be plenty for most situations.

For me it would be something very similar to either the 686 or the 5 inch 327. Im leaning towards the 686 but I havent handled the 327 enough to say if Id like it better or not.

For me ultimate combat revolver would be:
4 or 5 inch barrel
full underlug
Chambered in either 357 Magnum or 10mm to allow the shorter less recoil options
Adjustable but very rugged night sights.
Smooth double action trigger

For me the 686 comes closest to that. My primary carry load would be a mild 357 Magnum like the 135 grain Gold Dot. It still has some oomph but has less recoil than a full tilt magnum load.
 
For me, a fighting revolver needs an action smooth enough that I can fire two rounds with split times in a fraction of a second. It needs to be accurate enough that I can put 2 rounds in the same place quick. It needs a barrel short enough to conceal, but long enough to be effective out to at least 25 yards. It needs to be built to withstand anything I have to shoot through it and be comfortable to shoot.

I have a Model 28 that has an action professionally smoothed. A narrow, smooth competition trigger. Hogue cushioned grips. And a four inch barrel. With that N frame anything from mild to wild is no problem to shoot.

Still feel S&W M10 is a highly effective and pragmatic choice, below with M25.
Especially when loaded with Buffalo Bore's 158 yr "outdoorsman",
Underwood makes a similar load.
BB and UW also both make an effective "FBI" type load, lead HP.

It’s already been made...

S&W Mdl 10, round butt, 4” heavy barrel with brass inlay front sight, stoked with the ole 158grn LSWCHP.

My preferred choice would be a Ruger Vaquero, polished stainless, brass front sight, 4-3/4” barrel; in .45 Colt; with plow grips. Full six up, low pressure and a big bullet; reliable as the Sun at noon.

Hmmm.... "ultimate, go-anywhere, do-anything combat revolver"

Smith K Frame ... a 4" bbl'd M-66 (Don't want an "L" frame for its add'l weight nor the full length under bbl. lug for the same reason.) ... find one with a well worn-in, smooth as a baby's behind, DA trigger, but with "tight as a tick" lock up....give it adj. sights that stay put once adjusted...white line front, white outline rear...or tritiums if you can provide 'em on a Baughmann ramped front...give me a narrow smooth combat trigger and a narrow hammer too...and lastly, add a pair of smooth 'coke bottle' grips further sanded to fit my grip EXACTLY with some burl in the walnut or rosewood...closest I've found are vintage Ropers, but Mikulek's combat offerings are a very close 2nd place.

Loads: I'd like something on the order of the old "FBI" .357 158 gr LSWC-HP. Put 'em up in .38 special brass for easier, more reliable ejection, and make them with a soft enough LSWC-HP that'll expand at 950 fps from a 4" tube. Of course I don't want any leading from those hefty slugs...better gas check them. Stuff them in Safariland gen ll speed loaders for ease of reloading too. A pair would do nicely.

Leather: An open top, snug fitting Tom Threepersons that needs no thong nor strap. I'll wear it at 4 o'clock, OWB, thank you very much. Make it a black one, maybe with a bit of stamping for BBQ nights...& black hides well with dark trousers, I find. Cinch it up with a 1-1/2" wide 10 oz. gun belt with a good, tight fit between holster loop and belt. That width will fit through all of my belt loops, & still support that 38 oz. revolver with a cpl of speed loaders thrown in. Make it up with a dull brass or silver buckle that won't reflect light in an alley. And be sure of the fit of the holster loop/ belt, I want it snug; I don't want that rig sliding around on me...

A real beauty!

I prefer the 5 1/2" barrel length the best, as it has a perfectly "balanced" look to it in my eye! But the other barrel lengths are fine, too.

Thank you. I built it for my own enjoyment but appreciate hearing others compliment it.

Just so you are aware, that is a European copy I picked up in the late 70s from Navy Arms.

The stocks are one piece smooth stag I built for it and the front sight is an Indian Head penny cut to fit. I fitted the ACP cylinder and have no idea where the long Colt cylinder is!

I don't care that it's a copy. That's a rather sincere form of flattery, in my opinion.

I would have long ago had a copy myself if I didn't have my heart set on a Colt.
 
Much as I like S&W K frames, my vote would go to the Ruger Security Six, stainless, with the 4" barrel. It can handle the hottest realistic 357 magnum loads down to 38 special WCs. If 'combat' were not a factor it would be a Ruger Blackhawk in 41 magnum with the 4 5/8" barrel.

I would love to see Kimber make an 8 shot K frame sized .357 revolver. DAO first and eventually DASA.
They got 6 rounds into a slightly larger than J frame size so, if they could do a slightly larger than K frame in the same K6S all steel, no MIM format and cram 8 rounds in that would be interesting!

You can barely get 7 rds of 357 Mag in an L-frame/GP100 (the GP100 suffers badly from rim lock with some ammo brands) and to get 8-rounds in an N-frame S&W had to move the barrel up in the frame to make it work and Ruger had to use their Super Redhawk frame. No way your getting 8rds in a K6S even one scaled up to a L-frame let along something as small as a K-frame. You are going to need an N-frame size cylinder to get 8-rds of 357 mag no mater how you slice that pie.
 
I didn’t think it would be easy. In between K-N frame, same with Cylinder size. I’m staying positive!
 
I have it, A 686 7 shot Mountain gun pre lock
Just about the same weight as a 66 with a 4” brl

A close 2nd would be a model 26
Tapered barrel 5” S&W 45 colt
Have yet to acquire
