What else needed to be grandfathered?

I was going to build an AR very slowly (like a part every six months or so), but I'm starting to think I should attempt to find parts now that I may not be able to buy legally in the future. I have a lower so what else?

Magazines of course. Pistol grip? Stock? Flash hider?

No need to discuss the actual possibility of a ban or the current market situation. That dead horse has been beaten enough. Just wondering what all could be regulated and thus needs to be purchased now in order to be grandfathered in.

Get a lower first. The lower has the serial number and considered the "firearm".

But there is no way of knowing how a new ban, if enacted, will read. Best would be to get all the parts ASAP in case selling the parts and lowers are banned.

Magazines are more than likely the only thing that would be regulated, and even then it would be round count... Parts should be plentiful when manufacturing catches up...

There is no reason at all to even speculate. IF there ever will be a ban, the text could say almost anything at all. There is no concrete logic behind assuming that even if you had every piece already in your possession, it would even be legal to assemble them.

If you think a ban is coming, save your money. If you don't think a ban is coming, buy whatever you want whenever you want it.
