A post by a new member here asking about a starting firearm got me to thinking, since most of the suggestions ran along the lines of "22, it's what I started with." I got curious about my fellow High Roaders. For me, it was a single shot bolt action Mauser in .22.

Pretty sure it was my dad's Remington Fieldmaster (pump action 22lr), although it's possible that my first shot with the ancient break-action single-barreled .410 shotgun was first... early enough in my memory that the childhood amnesia thing is making sequence very difficult to keep straight.

We didn't shoot a lot, but my brother and I were both exposed at an early age.

While I consider myself having learned shooting using a .22LR (Savage Model 3B bolt action) the first gun I literally shot was a .410. I think it was a Savage Model 220A - based on what I'm seeing online. When my dad hunted he let me carry it - empty of course. On a couple of occasions, at the end of the day, he'd say "Want to shoot it?" After saying "Yes" he'd pull a .410 shell out of his pocket and let me load it. Then I'd fire it into a field. I thought it was awesome.

Either my dads marlin 60 or his convertible 9... it was a single action, cowboy style .22 revolver that had both .22 LR and .22 WMR cylinders. We usually shot that with mags.

.22 pump at a shooting gallery. THere was a place called Suburban Park by us. It was a old time amusement park that we went to. I remember shooting it with my grandfathers help back in the mid 60s. I was around 6 or 7. He had a M94 30-30 and a M12 16ga. I still have them. Funny thin is the park was about 1 mile from the gun club I joined back in the 70s. I drive past the old location on the way there. Ah memories.
Edit: I was searching the net over the weekend and found some images of Suburban Park. Click on the pics and scroll down to pic #7. Thats the shooting gallery.

First I remember was Winchester 52 with diopter sights with the Jaycee rimfire team in 5th grade. Had already been shooting bb guns like crazy and was on the air rifle team before stepping up to the big gun, so to speak lol.

The first I can remember was my dad's .22 semi-auto rifle. I'm sure it was a Winchester, and it had a scope, but I don't think I ever knew what model it was. It was in the early to mid '50s when he let me shoot it - if that's any indication of what model it might have been.
The first firearm I shot a lot was my Winchester Model 55, single-shot automatic, .22 rimfire. Mom and Dad gave it to me on my 10th birthday in 1958. I still have it.:)

My dad had a Ruger 4” 357 for a bit and we shot it at an indoor range in Cleveland Ohio when I was a kid. Probably 40 years ago. Wish I still had it.

I got to shoot my dad's model 12 Remington pump when I was 6 years old. I still have the rifle and it still works perfectly. Once in awhile I shoot it just to bring back the memories.

Dad sold all of his guns in New York before moving here in 1986. His first purchase in Virginia was a Marlin 336 .30-30. That was the first gun I shot, first gun I owned, first gun I got a deer with, and still one of my favorites at the range.

My dad's gold trigger Browning Buckmark .22lr pistol. After that was my dad's bolt action .410. That was over 25 years ago and I'm sure me or my brother will inherit them one day.

Neat! That was what my dad first shot, and he wandered around the woods and lakes in Michigan with it. I still have it, and fire it every now and then. It works nice and smooth, but boy that barrel is rough.

The first one I shot was a stainless speed-six in 357 Magnum, but it was probably loaded with 38s when I did. I was 8. I remember struggling to aim and hit the bottle cap we were plinking at in a gravel pit..... My dads friend said, "don't aim, just point at the damn thing", and Bam! I hit it.
I still have that one, too
