The rumor is that the guy who owns it got tired of all the work it takes to keep it up to date and gave up on it. For the past few months it's been down about half the time.

Might as well just sell it... I wonder what's holding him back? Not gonna get rich off a 2a site.. might as well let someone who actually cares run with it.

For Arizonans, ccw-permit.com has state specific info. They also have forums for both AZ and UT.

I haven't liked it since they changed the software. At least the way it used to be I could find what I was looking for. The "new" site, when it's up, is virtually unnavigable with regard to news, articles, and commentary. And, as others have commented, the state-by-state CCW information isn't being kept up to date.

I was also on the old version. I think there are merits and demerits of the new site. Overall, when it works, I think it is good. Although, it could use some updating. I was one of the posters who volunteered to help out.

IIRC Mark refused to use standard forums software such as vBulletin or even phpbb and wanted to write his forum software from scratch. No wonder it took time to do. There's so much info there it would be a shame to loose.
Has anyone been in touch with Mark to see what his plans are?

The problem is that a site that's first and foremost a reference site rather than a discussion forum doesn't lend itself to running on forum software. However, that could have been dealt with by splitting the site into two sites, one with the hard information and a separate one for the forum discussions.
I do agree that the site was infinitely easier to navigate before the software change. I don't use the site now, because I can't. However, www.handgunlaw.us just doesn't provide the same kind of info that packing.org provides. Yes, it's information on the same topic, but the depth of info isn't there.

If anyone knows him, ask him if he'd like to pass the responsibility of ownership/maintenance of it. I think it used to be a very useful resource, and can host it myself. Don't know that it needs a forum, but THR folks could probably do a lot to keep the info current on the static part of the site.

Derek, that's very kind of you. I think the original host (Is that the correct 'puter term?) was just over whelmed. I sent a few minor corrections to him and he never got around to changing the information.

Mark is very "disconnected" from Packing.org right now. Its also in chaos right now too. With that merit system, we get a ton of trolls who go through the discussion boards and "demerit" everyone's posts till they don't show up anymore (the software hides a post deemed "inappropriate" due to a low score by default). Then also spam every post they can find.

As stated in this thread, Mark posted that he had several changes in his life in the last year and started law school and could not manage the site and attend school.
I thought he did turn the site over to some of the moderators, but I could be wrong.

He was supposed to be appointing mod's from those who volunteered but last I checked he didn't even get around to doing that. I used to visit Packing.org mult times a day every day since I became a member in 2001, but now I rarely go there. I think the trolls are a mix of anti's and just plain idiots who aren't really against guns, but seem to take advantage of the system when they don't like someones point of view. I've seen where one person will get targeted over and over by these "reviewing bandits".

I have been meaning to make that exact tool for quite some time now, just don't have the time. Full time job and then I come home and work on a web project for about 6 hours a night the past two months. That map thing was my first free-time priority once my project was complete.

The guy might as well can the site altogether or turn it over to someone else. I no longer trust any of the info that's posted there. Gun laws change constantly and if the guy can't be bothered to keep his website up and running reliably, I doubt he's keeping an eye on the gun laws in 50 states.

The title is misleading, could more correctly be called an "honors" map as it does not depict reciprocity, rather it shows where the permit from your State is valid. For example, NC does not honor the NM permit, but NM honors the NC permit. If you go to the NC map thinking it shows reciprocity you would get the wrong impression.

I have read through a few threads since packing.org has been back up. I have refrained from posting anything since the new rating system and seemingly young overall age or at least low maturity level seems to just lead to arguments and negative comments towards one another. I still have yet to see a single name that I recognize in any of the posts...ohwell, I guess it was good while it lasted
