Would love to find the time to leave Kansas and try using my old Savage 340 30 30 on some hogs. Kansas won't let you hunt them so untill I get more vaction time I guess I won't know how my old rifle will do
Kansas won't let you hunt hogs? What are they afraid of? That you might be shooting all the domestic hogs that are up there? I remember riding my motorcycle through Iowa a few years ago and coming down into the small valley between the rolling hills and being quickly assaulted by the smell of hog feeder lots. I suspect Kansas has its share also...

I have bagged many... Compound Bow 65 lbe pull broad heads and G-5 80lbs to 200 lbs... Stock Mossberg .410 1/4oz or BB 5 shoot. 100-180 LBS... Lever action 30/30 50lbs - 250lbs.. and I have stuck few with the old knife, always fun...

is 20 ga slugs good for a bad shot???????

Nothing short of an explosive devise will make up for poor marksmanship. While yes a slug from a 20ga (at the proper range) will give you a slight bit more margin for error, NO firearm can make up for a bad shot placement short of a shotgun using double 00 buck and even then you still have to aim fairly well for a clean kill.

Shot this wild boar hog with my .357 Ruger GP100 6" revolver tonight at 25 yards from a tripod stand. 158 gr. Hornady XTP HP bullet. Hog was around 300lbs. Ran 30 yards and fell in the brush. We could not find a bullet hole and the hog did not bleed. Only thing we can figure is the flesh and fat sealed the bullet hole, and it was a heart or spinal cord shot.
