I think that's what it is... Hmmmmm. Looks like the front end of a 581 or 586 grafted onto a J frame? https://www.gunbroker.com/item/892614870
I can't imagine why anyone would come close to the minimum on that item ... I'd call it nigh on to worthless.
I've been cruising Gunbroker for a deal on a Model 49 and came across that earlier this week. Seems like a great way to ruin two classic Smiths...
I didn't think there were any pinned barrels with underlugs for J frames. Someone must have liked it enough to put some holster wear on the barrel. Unless that was done before all the swapping began. A little strange even though I do like 3" Js.
I like 3” but that is a very strange setup. A full lug (and looks like heavy profile as well) on a pocket gun frame is wrecking the whole point of the gun. I even have the stuff to do a 4” j frame 38 in a PPC setup just for fun, but this beast has made me reconsider. Maybe oversized grips would make the visual disparity look more normal.
Really? What was worse? The more I look at it the more I think of the episode of Southpark where they tried to crossbreed a pig and an elephant.
Manbearpig is real, Im super cereal! I once saw a '98 Mauser with Nazi, Syrian, and Isreali stamps, rechambered for .30-06 by screwing an '03 Springfield barrel to it, drilled and tapped for a Swing-away scope mount, with double set-triggers and dropped into a camo- painted polymer thumbhole stock. I wasnt sure if it was real or I was having a seizure-induced hallucination. Sadly, it was real.
$700 starting bid for that "Old School Cool" mess??? I'm sure there is someone out there desperate and will pony up the money for it. From the description: "overall it looks excellent": Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. "I think this was a custom job; there is a slight difference in finish between the barrel and frame.": REALLY? What gave that away? "For over a century, serious people knew 5rds of 38spl had devastating potential, and the shrouded hammer bodyguard can reliably deliver when a pocket or other obstruction makes an automatic into a single shot.": You mean to say I don't need a "wondernine"? Good golly, I'll keep carrying my Ruger LCRx 3inch then. I hit what I aim at.
I have a 3" J-Frame with full barrel and adjustable sights. Not really a pocket gun but one of the best trail guns I own. Its a model 36-6 and S&W only made 615 of them. I didn't get the box and docs but am glad to have it. Its a sweet shooter to boot. A hot 38 is about all I want to shoot out of it. A midrange WC load is perfect. A WC bullet pushed by 3.5-4grs of Bullseye makes for a stout load.
That barrel fitment looks about like the CA Professional. Maybe it's really a prototype of that given the price. I think I'll pass.
Ummm I didn't quite think "desperate", but this is The High Road, so I'll leave it alone. $700 ... hmmm. Not from my checkbook.
It is for the non discerning buyer (trying to come up with something more highroad than “sucker”). Going to have to aim higher than the Air Force with that one.
I noticed there are zero bids this morning. This thing makes me think this was a gunsmithing school project or an experiment by someone, perhaps the seller. Regardless, it’s silly. If I made something like that I would not insult the world by trying to sell it.
As Member mdrisc85 so succinctly pointed out, what a terrible waste of a good S&W barrel and a vintage Model 49!
On a side note, the weight of that barrel would greatly reduce felt recoil. Perhaps that was the intent behind the project, I think it’s almost unanimous that the end product was not the creme de la creme visually, and it can’t possibly shoot well with gutter rear and tall blade front sight... but it would have a lot less recoil than a standard model 49 and with recoil in a J frame 38 being stout this modification could make the gun shootable for someone who is recoil sensitive. A lot of work needs to be done to improve the visual appeal and sight picture, but the gun is not totally a lost cause.
Shop job. A barrel from a M36 adjustable sight variant on a M49. And a trigger shoe, woo, woo. Chic Gaylord would have loved it.
It's freaking me out. Someone needs to buy it and have it melted down so it doesn't exist any more. Whoever put it together did a really poor job of blending the new barrel with the frame.
