What is an acceptable group for a 38 special?

I'm currently getting 2" at 35 yards resting my forearms on the porch railing.
Standing at 25 is holding between 4 and 5. Far from great, but I've only run 100 handgun rounds in revolvers in the last year.

I think you should be shooting competitions your doing great and would quickly become the one to beat.

I like to use the TQ-2 target for this work. The black bull is 2.3" in dia and makes a good pistol target out to about 20 yds. These were shot at 10 yds, with butt on ground and forearms supported on my knees. Bullets were MBC coated 148gr DEWC out of a 6" Ruger GP100.

I can't say enough good things about the GP100.

It's a rock island attempt at the colt detective. I try to hold myself to a higher standard than average in anything I do. Obviously the RIA and I won't turn out bullseye level groups, so I was was wondering what the next step down people are ok with.
A friend and I just went out last week and played with his snub nose ria .38 and I'll tell ya, I can shoot much better with my .41 Blackhawk, and quite a bit better with our Lil .327 single 7, I'm decent enough with the 19-4, the lil m60 pro was acceptable, with the 73 clone I could hunt deer out to 50 yds with handloads, but groups weren't as spectacular, and with that lil ria setup? Well, I hit the target and didn't count groups lol. For me mostly, it's the sights with the ruger rigs, i get along with the sights phenomenally. Longer barrels help too, but at the end of the day, your shooting is impressive! I'd be thrilled to get close to that with the ria rig!!

Mine got dismantled and I did a trigger job and put pachmeyer grips for the detective special on it. If you ain't right, you hit center mass.

Was at the range today and was able to shoot a 2” group at 25 yards with 100 rounds and having a half dozen outside of the group but still less than 3” with my 686 with a reflex sight on it. I’m going to have a 28 and a 14 drilled for a rail to mount reflex sights on them. Just can’t do iron sights with these old eyes anymore.

How accurately one can aim makes a huge difference on what to expect. Which one of these revolvers do you think shoots smaller groups at 60 yards?

I would “assume” the second one however I’ve never shot a handgun with anything other than iron or a reflex sights.

Well, to me it's good to be at a place where the handgun can shoot a bunch better than I thought. May take some shooting. All this shooting is between me and the target. Everybody else does not count.

Addendum: My most favorite for shooting at 25 years is a 1953 vintage Smith 38 Combat Master piece. They don't make'um like the used to. For a fact.
