What is legally considered the gun?

Regarding the semi-automatic pistol, what part is considered the gun? In other words, if I buy all aftermarket parts (assembled frame, and then a conversion kit that includes the slide, barrel, and spring), would any of those require FFL to transfer?

Most are the frame, but I do have on of those sig 250's and the internal block is the firearm.
What pistol are you looking at?

The serial numbered receiver is the gun. On most handguns thats the frame, but there are exceptions.

MtnCreek mentioned the SIG P250 (which IIRC is that way because you can swap out frame sizes on that gun). The Ruger rimfire pistols (except for the SR22) are another exception where the top receiver that attaches to the lower frame is considered to be the gun.

So if I were to get a Lone Wolf completed frame for Glock, would that be considered the gun? Do those have individual serial numbers?

My plan is that if a magazine ban goes through (I'm being active to hopefully make sure it doesn't, but if it does I have a plan) to give the gun-grabbers the proverbial obscene gesture by making my EDC a .50 GI pistol. It would have less than 10 rounds, but hey I'd be carrying a .50 cal. I figure that instead of buying the 1911 (which is $3k and I don't like the 1911 platform) or buying a G21 and then converting it, the cheapest option would be to get a Timberwolf frame (supposedly the G20/21 frame is coming out soon) and then attach the Guncrafter Industries conversion kit to it.

Your plan is exactly what I've been predicting to my gun-control-proponent friends: if you reduce magazine capacity, people will go to bigger calibers.

Yep! The other thing I was thinking of is a M&P 45 if they make a CORE model for that, to replace my plan for a M&P 9.

As to long guns, I was looking at what options are available in the .35-40 range...unfortunately not a lot, but there were one or two that looked promising if they have much production (.358 gremlin, for example). Or I might just go .50 beowulf to have .50 cal in my rifle too. I don't own an AR yet, but would like to own one.

Haranguer...I don't understand your comment. I'd be getting the appropriate magazines for the caliber I selected.

ETA: So I would have to have to assembled frame sent to a local FFL instead of to myself? Would actually work, because I'd probably want to bring the slide in to my gunsmith anyway (if he does milling, which I suspect he might).

Yes. Assembled or not, the frame has to go to an FFL. As a matter of fact you can have an assembled slide and every other part within the frame sent to your door, but that frame has to go to the FFL. It just so happens that you when you buy a new gun the frame usually has the rest of the gun attached to it :).

Personally I already carry a single-stack .380 so any potential mag laws wouldn't have any affect on my carry gun (though I do have a lot of other guns that it would affect), but I do see a HUGE boom in popularity of bigger guns if this passed. The last AWB did a lot to promote .40S&W over 9mm. Afterall, if you're going to be limited, its better to lose 3 or 4 rounds of capacity than 6 or 7.

Well I'd rather just get the assembled frame. That would be a lot easier on me.

Like I said, though, I hope I don't buy this. Because if I do, it will mean we lost.
