What is the best .22 "fun gun" to buy?

Hey, don't forget the AR-7!

There's just something about a floating takedown design.
Besides, if it has AR in it's name it's got to piss off the antis! :D

I believe there are still some 25 or 32 round mags for those around.

Walther P22. What else can you get in such a fun little lightweight compact package that is considered an evil assault weapon in California?

What exactly is a Nylon 66 and why did it get that name?

The Nylon 66 was made for several years by Remingtion. It is a selfloading .22lr. They made several different versions like a lever action Nylon 76 and detachable magazine fed Nylon 77. It is made mostly of nylon and is incredibly durable. The apparently made over 1 million Nylon 66's before Remington wore out the machinary. These are incredibly fun little guns to shoot. The Nylon 66 has a tube magazine in the stock that holds 14 rounds. Did I mention it is fun to shoot. I believe they stopped production in the early 80's. Somewhere there is a really good article about the Remington Nylon 66 but I can't seem to find it.

My wife has a Calico m100s that she says looks like "Buck Roger's squirrel gun" that has a 100 rnd helical feed magazine that's awfully cool.

Greeting's Alan

I feel like you already know that I'm going
to recommend the very fine Colt Match
Target Woodsman. Prices have escalated in
the past few years; but nice ones can still be
found that won't break the bank!

Stupid, but probably fun . . .

Ala Dan posted about the Colt Match Target Woodsman.

Dan, I'v e owned one of these fine pistols since 1975/76, they are a pure pleasure to shoot and mine is still like new. I found some new factory mags for mine at a gun store in California about 10 years ago, still in their clear plastic package but they were not cheap, cost was over twice the price my Colt Gold Cup mags cost.;)

Greeting's DorGunR

Good to hear my friend! Yes, the Match Target
Woodsman is a fine example of a quality
target pistol. I'm afraid not too many of our
members share the same thoughts though?
Maybe, its cuz they didn't get the chance to try
one before they were abruptly discontinued.
Great self-loader, and one that you can easily
transition from, to the Colt Gold Cup.

I have owned three different .22 auto rifles; a Win. model 190, a Mossberg(don't know model, but it is fed through the stock), and a Marlin 60. I still have the latter two, but the Winchester was my favorite.

I would think that a pump-action .22 would be really fun!

My Ruger MkII Government made pistol shooting fun (as compared to the work it seemed to be when I was shooting my 1911s).

The Ruger, a brick, a big stack of targets and nothing on the to-do list is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Favorite .22LR

My .22LR favorites are:

Revolver: S&W 17-4 6" barrel with an Ultradot sight
Pistol: CZ75B with a Kadet Adapter
Rifle: CZ452

All very accurate, reliable and just plain fun to shoot.

Soft spot for old .22 single shot rifles. Like an Rem 514.
Nylon 66 ( I want the brown butt-fed one please)
Marlin 60
Marlin and Winchester lever action...one of each...just because.
Gotta have a Winchester Model 52 'nuff said.

In a handgun...gimme a Model 18 Smith
Ruger Bearcat
Beretta model 21A ( you ain't tried "golf" with a 21A yet - shame on you).
Colt Woodsman ( classic)
High Standard Duramatic
High Standards "match guns" are fun.

Aw hell I forgot...what is the Winchester Pump...that one. The Fieldmaster by Rem is nice...that Win was ...well ...memories.

Nice looking 60.
If I can make a small suggestion -
Take an old bleach bottle and cut a section out of it. Use that section as a spacer between the black plastic and the wood stock.
Dresses it up a little.

Clipse,
Thank you for educating me.

I didn't grow up in the gun culture so I missed out on learning about many of the classics. Slowly but surely, with the help of this forum, other forums and books, I'm correcting the situation and having a lot of fun at the same time.:D

Clipse,

Thanks for educating me.

No prob. Anytime. I learned about the Nylon 66 through my father-in-law. He has had one since he was a kid. Never cleaned and it runs like a top. Feeds everything, while not pinpoint accurate it will get a good 2 inch group at 50 yards. Good enough for squirrels and paper for fun.

Hal ... you have me intrigued!! I think I am following you but not quite sure. If you have the time ... would you elaborate just a tad .... be useful. :)

Chip .... your welcome fella .. I think (know) you'll like using one! Oh BTW .... I find with Marlin .... when you fill the tube .. and with slide locked back ... it'll only want 14 rounds. Let slide close (on empty chamber) in advance of filling and all 15 will go in.

Chris,
I read this in one of the gun rags ~ 25 or so years ago.
-Take the black plastic piece off of the butt.
-Cut a small section of plastic out of an old bleach bottle just a bit larger than the plastic piece.
-Poke a couple of holes in the plastic from the bleach bottle for the screws.
-Screw that in place between the black plastic piece and the wood on the buttt of the stock.
-Use a razor blade or a sharp knife and shave the excess off of the piece of bleach bottle.

It adds a white spacer between the black plastic and the wood that adds a bit of contrast between the black and the wood colors. I suppose you could use just about any color plastic just to be different, maybe blue or yellow?
