what is the best way to store guns for 1-year or more?

Funny about the foam - I have one rifle in an old Doskocil foam case since I have no room in my safe. Been in the case for 11 years now - take it out once a year to check and give it a quick wipe with Remoil - no rust, no foam breakdown - and this is in nice cool arid central FLORIDA where the low humidity is 50%.....

Just sayin'....................

It's not guaranteed that a gun in a foam case will rust, just much more likely than if it's stored in the open.

Trust me, I've seen plenty of foam rusted guns, sometimes with the waffle pattern of the foam transferred in rust to the gun.

Notice how every single person in this thread that's mentioned VPI bags has stated how well they work, without specialized cleaning and lube/wax routines?

That's 'cuz that is how it works. Having spend decades storing guns in various ways, I can categorically state that I will never NOT use VPI bags for long term storage. They just work.

Not me. See post #25. I used VCI bags WITH Breakfree COLLECTOR. Now, I'll admit that it's entirely possible that the VCI bags would have prevented rust without the oil, but it ease of application is the primary reason I selected COLLECTOR over alternatives and I wasn't going to experiment without the oil.

If I ever have to store guns long term again, I won't hesitate to use VCI bags again. I'll probably use COLLECTOR again as well.

R.I.G. applied with a RIG-RAG.
Then stored with open air circulation so nothing that can hold humidity or mosture comes in contact with the metal.

I, and numerous other gun collectors have used it successfully for 50 or more years.
Including the S&W collectors whose gun photos appear in the Standard Catalog of S&W bible.

One of whom, Mr. Gary Skeet, tipped me off on RIG & open air circulation storage in 1960 something.

If it's climate controlled, i.e. air conditioned and dry, then there is no risk of rust. Just clean and oil your gun as normal and store.
