I am not sure about the present implementation status of California's proposed new definition of assault weapons, but from what I have seen online, part of the definition says that any centerfire semiauto rifle with any detachable magazine would be considered an assault weapon if it has a thumbhole stock. My question is, what do antigunners have against thumbhole stocks? Most thumbholes that I have seen are on rifles intended for target use.
