What is the lowest caliber you will carry

Over the years I've carried .22s, .25s, and .32s, but I nowadays I don't go below a .380 and usually carry a 9mm for CCW purposes.

Still any of them are better than nothing.

Depends

I can keep ten rounds of .22 LR inside a 4-inch circle at 30 feet, rapid fire.

There's a certain comfort in that knowledge.

I can do almost as well with a single-stack 9mm pocket pistol at the same range, but that's only seven or eight rounds, depending on the magazine in use.

That's also comforting.

I can put three or four (occasionally six) out of twelve inside that same circle at the same range from a .40 S&W, also rapid fire. The rest of the rounds make a kind of pattern out to six or eight inches.

Not quite as comforting, but still, four-to-six rounds of .40 in the ruin-your-day zone is probably adequate.

So I could carry the .22 and find that comforting, but I believe max comfort is going to be the 9mm pocket pistol.

Speaking theoretically, if I had a chance to become proficient with something in .380 or .32 ACP, I believe I'd be happy to carry one of those. I've often contemplated picking up one of those little 1907/1917 Savage pistols in .32 just to see whether I can hit anything with it. If I could, I'd add the .32 to the list.

Carry calibers

Depends on what..
Mostly...it'd be a .22, either .22LR as a general walk around gun or something like the 5.7X28 if the social milieu is more threatening (I generally stay away from those places).
When I was walking in the woods in AK, a friend had lent me a .40 S&W Glock....I did not feel comfortable with that. It was, however, all that I had.

ArfinGreebly: I used to know some .22 target pistol shots who had no need to ever carry bigger. They could hit coin-sized bulls at 50 feet all day long, including rapid fire. Just aime between the running lights, SEAL style. Need say no more.

When I walk my dog, I often carry a .25 lorcin. It is small, easy to conceal, and fits my needs. I also carry pepper spray and would use that before the .25.

Sometimes when I am hunting / hiking I only carry a .22LR six gun.

Your brain and telephone are the largest weapon in the arsenal.

EDIT:

Do not bother to slam my lorcin with gun snob ignorant opinions. I would put it against anything and have.

I would have no problem carrying a FN FiveseveN (5.7X28, which is actually just a high powered .22) If I had one (I do want one, now for the $$$$)

It all depends

Are we talking bear country or mean city streets or a country store, for example.

1. Have a gun
2. Use enough gun.
3. Carry as much gun as you can handle effectively

Obviously, out in the woods, I would be comfortable with a 12 Ga. riot gun or .30-06 and a .44 Mag. as backup.

In town .40 S&W or .45 ACP

Bigger is better.
