I stopped at rivers edge cutlery today during my lunch break to look at a spyderco tenacious. The lightweight model with S30V appears to be discontinued and I thought it looked like a nice work knife. Good steel but not overly expensive to beat around and possibly lose. I had also been thinking I'd like to get a combo edge knife again. Well, when I held the tenacious in my hand it just wasn't quite right for me. I have pretty big hands and the knife just sat at a funny angle in my hand and the radius to open the blade with the thumbhole was awkward. The next step up to the resilience was just too big so I passed on the spydercos and wandered.
The Kunwu XTao caught my eye and after holding it I had to buy it. I really don't like wire pocket clips but it comes with a spare clip and 2 extra omega springs for the "axis" lock. The handle is beefy and so is the blade, but it's still a reasonable thickness to stick in your pocket. I really like the blade shape as well. Very smooth action and very good fit and finish.
I've always had a thing for titanium handled knives. My first one was a benchmade 750. I think it holds the record for the longest I've ever gone without getting bored with a factory knife. I made myself something similar and carried it for years. Sharpened about a 1/4 inch off the 440C blade. Finally got to where the home made one had a bit too much sentimental value and I retired it from regular carry and switched to fixed blades. Then I found the real steel rokot and loved the long slim design. After using it down in a muddy trench I discovered flippers are not the greatest choice for hard use knives, and I have wished the handle was a bit more stout, and the blade had a bit more belly. The Xtao pretty much fixes all my complaints about the rokot, so here we go.
I should probably buy a sebenza but they have never quite flipped the switch for me, and I don't want to drop that kinda money and get bored with it in 6 months. Eventually I'll catch up at work and I'll make myself another knife of some kind.
