I have a rifle, marked "mauser modelo 1909 argentina" it is a bolt action, witha stepped barrel, and has a crest on the reciver that I cannot identify. Bolt looks to be standard mauser '98...but not sure, and would like some info on the history and caliber. There is also some german writing on the side of the barrel. Any info, including history and caliber is appreciated.

It's an Argentinian Mauser.
From the latter part of the 19th century and all throuhgout the 20th dozens of countries adopted the basic Mauser design in numerous calibers as their armies main battle rifle and produced them localy under licence from the Mauser family.
The US did this with the Springfield '03 which was Americas battle rifle from before WWI, to the very early stages of WWII. It was also used throughout the entire 20th centrury in a sniper rifle roll as well.
The crest you see there is most likely the coat of arms of The Argentinian Army/ Goverenment.
I'm no expert as to the specific model that you possess but there are many web pages out there covering the huge number of Mauser designs and how to identify them. Remember....Google is out friend.

Well it sounds like you've got an Argentine Mauser. These rifles were made in Germany for the Argie Gov't. It was probably originally chambered for the 7.63 Cartridge, but have it checked out by a gunsmith before you actually fire it. It's possible it was converted to another caliber at some point. The action is probably based on the 1898 Mauser. Can you post pictures? If you don't have a digital camers, do you have a flatbed scanner? You can laythe rifle on the scanner, cover it with a sheet or several pieces of paper and scan and image of the markings that way.
