What is this thing on the side of my model 94?

Old-timers often wrapped the ring with a strip of rawhide or leather boot-lace to deaden the sound of it constantly tinkling against the receiver.

The ring for my '94 is still in the bag hanging on my gun closet wall. I got my rifle in '67.

Yeah I'll probably just try and get it out of there and put a proper plug screw in. I don't think it'll be hard to get out as long as I can get some kind of a grip on it. All the other receiver screws turned easily, it's just that this one has nothing to hold onto. Thanks for the tips
