What is your favorite powder for reloading .45acp?

I used a lot of AA No 5. Unique works really well, too. But it's awful dirty. Lots of guys at the club really liked Universal Clays.

Depends on the power level. Clays is bad for ball-equivalent or pin loads, since it is hard not to get high pressure for those levels (i.e., flattened primers). But for mid-range and light loads, Clays under a 230gr lead bullet is super soft and accurate. I shot a bunch of W231 for mid- to heavy-power loads. Not as soft shooting, but plenty accurate. Titegroup also worked, but does not feel as soft as Clays.

I've used Bullseye for 50 years, except for the brief periods when I try something recommended by threads such as this. I always go back to Bullseye; I can't find any reason to go to any of the new "wonder powders".

The guys at the club said the same thing about it. Accurate, and the most pleasant recoil of any powder. And it was very efficient. They got a lot more rounds from a pound of Universal Clays than most other powders, while still getting a gentle recoil impulse.

WW 231 for just about everything in semi-auto handguns.:uhoh::scrutiny::cool:
Also light loads in .357 mag and everything in 38 special.

Cleaner, easier to meter, and cost effective, what's not to like?

Just to clarify, the guys were talking about liking Universal Clays. Not International Clays. Not "standard" Clays. Universal Clays.

I've never used it. I shoot a lot of 38 Super and 38 Special, and very little .45 ACP these days.

Favorite Powder(s) for .45 ACP

It depends on application. For accuracy: Bullseye, followed by Unique and Win 231. For all-around shooting, plinking, action shooting: Win 231 and Power Pistol. Of course, HP38 can be used anywhere you use Win 231. I have been meaning to try Universal Clays, Blue Dot, AA #5, Titegroup, WST and 700X. Some of these powders are very versatile and can be used with good results in a number of different cartridges. With 230 grain FMJ projectiles, Win 231 sees a lot of use. My most accurate loadings for 230 ball uses Sierra FMJ bullet over a carefully metered load of Bullseye. The powder burns kinda of messy, but the accuracy will make you wonder why you ever bought factory assembled ammo for you 1911.

Bullseye especially for 200 LSWC's. I am transitioning over to Bullseye for 200's, 230 LRN, and 230 FMJ, but I have shot more W231 in the 45 ACP than any other powder type. W231 is a great powder.

It may be a while before I am totally using Bullseye, I keep on picking up W231 at estate sales.

Come to mine I am sure that there will be a whole bunch of unopened Bullseye at a great price. :uhoh:

I had been reading a lot about how good HP-38/231 was so I bought a pound and tried it in several cartridges. It worked pretty good so I ordered an 8# jug. When I later tried it in my new Colt Rail Gun 45ACP awhile back the groups opened up considerably from when I was using Unique. Went back to Unique and they closed back up. Worked the Unique up to 6.4gr behind a 200gn MBC RNFP. It is accurate, no unburnt powder, and the cases are very clean.
I would really like to have a good HP-38 load for that, since I have a new jug. Anyone have any experience with this combo?

If 5.0 to 5.5 Grs of W-231 won't shoot well in your gun with your bullet, W-231 isn't for you.

Thanks. I believe I will revisit HP-38. I was using 5.2gr because that is what the Lee disk was throwing. I'll try the adjustable disk within your suggested range.

Titegroup.

Have shot loads with Bullseye and its a perfectly fine powder, just seems dirtier than Titegroup. Buddy just loaded up 200 rounds of .45 acp with power pistol, can't wait to shoot those.

Bullseye

I shoot lead pretty much exclusively.

I have tried TiteGroup but just a pound. Every time I buy Bullseye, it is in the 4lb or 8lb jugs, so it has become the de facto powder I use.

45 ACP = Unique.....that along with 9mm, 38 Super, 38 special and 357 mag.

You can load such a wide range of cartridges there really is no need for another powder for loading range ammo. If I want tons of power I reach for the H110.

Find out what works for you then buy an 8# jug.....No need to nickel and dime yourself with one pounders.

dickttx,
Sorry but I'm no fan of Unique for several reasons and I find it very hard to believe W231 wouldn't make .45 Auto ammo that didn't shot well.

With any 230gr bullet try a charge weight of 5.5gr W231/HP-38. I use the same charge with a 200gr lead bullet too.

Here's a couple that have not been mentioned:
Ramshot Silhouette (been using this for a few months and love it. Accurate, Clean, Meters Great, Very Low SD's)
IMR 4756 (Accurate, Pretty Dirty, Meter +/- Well, Shoots Smooth) This is a old powder that most people would overlook; may want to give it a try.

I've loaded (and still load) several others, but they've all been covered by the above posts.
