What is your home defense pistol choice?

There's a Girsan Regard on my night stand and a Kel-tec sub2000 in the corner of the bedroom. I too live alone so I have handguns placed strategically in every room of my small house. I trust my Pit Bull and American Bulldog to warn me and back me up.

I prefer a s/da pistol. But I have relegated them more to the range. I started thinking about what would happen in the moment if you are groggy and forget to take the safety off. So I just stick to my carry guns being my home defense guns. I rotate between a 2 kahrs and a 442. So usually the smith is every where I am and or a kahr by my bedside. That’s 12 rounds at hand. I keep a twenty gauge pump close so I’m likely to go to it if there is time.

16 rounds of .45 ACP or 21 rounds of 9mm. FNX with Streamlight light/laser now suppressed. WIfe has likes her SIG P-225A1, and two one-hundred pound German Shepherd Dogs are on standby... along with a cruiser-ready 590A1 and a 6920 with EOTech, light and laser in closet

Because I have predators with 2 and 4 legs,I keep my AR beside me in the bed with a 30 round Pmag in it and a 40 rounder for backup. My Sig M17 is there also and my 12 gauge Coach Gun is standing beside the bed loaded with 00 Buck.I keep a 17 round mag in the M17 with 2-21 rounders close at hand. The AR has a light on it and a good flashlight is in a compartment in the headboard.

An HK P30SK-V3 trigger and sometimes an HI P30SK with an LEM trigger.

I still prefer the SA/DA trigger but I am warming to the LEM trigger. It does have some benefits.

Both use the same magazines so reloads are easy.

It's my carry gun. For most of my life that was a .357 revolver, and more recently it's a Glock 29 - the subcompact in 10mm. (If I'm being completely honest, the .357 still lives in the bedside vault with the Glock. It's an old friend in which I have supreme confidence, while the Glock and I are still feeling each other out.)

It's worth noting, though, that I'm not a believer in handgun stopping power in general, and so my real home defense gun is a 12 gauge.

On my night stand, my night-sight equipped carry gun with an extended magazine, resting in a holster I modified so I can grab the gun and fling off the holster. A second mag lies beside it. Long guns, more handguns and a stash of ammo are strategically placed according to our home defense plan. Our Pyrenees will 1) warn us early and if need be - bless her loving soul - 2) give us cover to execute our plan.

Our hope is the massive nocturnal animal with her incredibly menacing growl will thwart all the above.

my townhome is in a quiet, safe, out of the way, unpretentious, suburban neighborhood with a dedicated security patrol. my main bedside piece is currently a 2” taurus 85 snubbie loaded with 38sp wadcutters. my usual carry piece, also kept bedside at night, is a keltec p32.

i’m swimming against the tide here by thinking of making my bedside piece a ruger sr22. why? i practice the most with it. it’s loaded with reliable cci minimags. at 20’ without thinking much i can consistently dump a ten round mag into center mass. i can reload it fast. the lower flashbang of 22lr ammo won’t disorient my aim, sight or hearing if i must use it fast indoors without hearing protection. call me nuts?
The Ruger SR22 is often overlooked by everyone for target fun and defense. It is perfectly reliable with CCI Minimags, has no recoil, it is extremely accurate, easy to load, very easy to conceal or carry since it is very lightweight and compact. For those that would refuse to rely on a 22lr, then use a Ruger SR9C. Same attributes as the SR22, just a little bigger.

I bought mine used but like new in the box. It also came with the E2 grips and 3 mags. It has night sights (dim but still glow 11 years later) and has the short reset trigger. Got the gun primarily for Home Defense as I liked the idea of having the first shot double action.

You can get a conversion barrel to turn your 40 caliber P229 into a 9mm whenever you want.

That will be my next firearms purchase.

Both of mine were used as well. My first was in terrific condition (I don't remember if it was like new or not), but did not come with a box and had Hogue grips. Unfortunately, a year or two after I bought it, I needed the money and sold it (never sell a gun that is one of your favorites if you can help it, I should have sold a few cheaper guns instead of picking those that would yield the most money so I wouldn't have to sell as many- I also did that with three classic S&W revolvers I loved over the same 1-2 year period). A few years ago (5 maybe), I finally replaced it with one that was probably a police gun. A lot of wear to the finish, but mechanically the gun is in great shape. This one has the original plastic grips.

If I was only going to use it at the range that might be a good (and relatively inexpensive) solution. From time to time I do think about using it for home defense or carry, and if I use it for defense I'd rather use them in the caliber they came from the factory. Also, my .40 is a bit beat up cosmetically, I'd like to get a new or LNIB 9mm P229 or P228 and get some nice wood grips. I love the gun, but I'd also like one that looks as good as it functions.
