First defense is Dakota 4 zone alert, with one for the driveway down near the road, 2nd is two dogs that love to bark at any car they don't know, 3rd is fencing rowed to funnel anyone coming in to have to use the driveway, and 4th would be 44mag on headboard, Ruger P89 on the wife's side, and numerous other always in range. There is more, but I don't like to tell just anybody everything.

Our two greyhounds will knock the intruder down and lick them to death. The Italian greyhound will gnaw them off at the ankles and the whippet will run circles around them making them dizzy.

By then, I should have awakened and retrieved my handgun.

We live out in the country on a small farm, so any commotion outside requires investigation.

I use whatever I have to hand. Our old deaf and near blind sheepdog is no warning / defence any more and my guns are all locked away safely so an intruder can't get them ...:(

I chose "pistol," but really my first line of defense is a locked door. To get in, you'd have to break in.

The pistol on my nightstand is a SIG P320 Carry with a Crimson Trace green laser.

Fainting or pretending having seizure episode or a heart attack.
Oops, these are for retail job behind the counter. Usually Mr. Feces thinks *** and runs off or sometimes steals few rhings and runs off.

While I keep pistols strategically located I have heard through reformed criminals that the #1 effective deterrent seems to be owning large LOUD dogs.

Over the course of decades I have seen where dogs have been poisoned, drugged, shot, beat up, small dogs placed in closets etc. Good perimeter protection and alarm system should include fire protection, carbon monoxide sensors as well.Unless your dog can call the police, fire and medical, you might think about getting a sophisticated alarm system from a reputable company.
You dogs life needs protection as well.

Arkansas Paul..Mine is a male at about 35 lbs. And yes, he goes berserk in around 2 seconds even if someone enters the driveway.

You must have one of the toy American Eskimo Dogs.

I'm an old Infantryman, and the first thing in any defense is EARLY WARNING. My early warning system is a pit bull. I live back in the woods, 3/4s of a mile from the county road. Old Dog Bones knows when a car turns off into my road and lets me know.

With early warning, I have time to get my shotgun.

I live in an upstairs apartment and don't keep pets of any kind. My first line is the two doors you have to get through and the creaky stairs in between. No one is gonna ninja their way into my domain that way. Windows on one side are off-limits, the neighbor's pits own that yard, and the rest of them aren't much easier to access.
My bedside gun is my EDC, along with my old Topper. I like keeping things simple.

For many people I know, not broadcasting their every move on facebook would be a good first step
Or, posting public pictures of guns and other valuable things they own

I know a guy that was working out back in his yard, quite a ways from the house. Garage door open, had a roll around tool box with a lot of expensive stuff. Pickup backs up to the garage, guys hop out and load the tool boxes into the pickup and gone.

This is in a busy neighborhood.

I keep my garage door closed, except when I’m going in and out. Lotsa layers of defense. Just the mower shed has over $12,000 worth of equipment so I keep it shut too.

So did they find out about the toolbox online? More like a crime of opportunity. The Attached garage is a big breach in security, that’s why I don’t have one.

Being smarter and having more forethought than the idiot who is about to make a VERY bad decision. I’ll just leave it at that.

I guess my first "line of defense" is my three dogs. They all have big ears. Then the S&W Pro Series takes over!!! IMG_0236.JPG

Maddy, the golden in my avatar is an exuberant greeter.
Always happy to see folks, she'll make a lot of noise. Then
comes Glock 34 if visitor in uninvited.

Already happened to me , let's say attempted home invasion . 45 on the night table at bed time , my children are married an have there own system , taught them well .

While I wouldn't have a tac light on my weapon, I use the reverse grip on light with a pistol loaded with blue glazer safety rounds. Was thinking of loading up some crushed coke bottles into some 12g rounds. Wouldn't that be a deterent!?!

If something goes "bump" in the night, the first thing I grab when I roll out of bed is my 12 ga. SxS. Those double triggers make a heck of a blast!
On the same gunrack hangs my .357 in its holster and an AK with a 40 rd. magazine.
Both the shotty and the AK have flashlights mounted on them.
During the day, other handguns are situated around the house - JIC. ;)

JTHunter sounds like if " trouble-comes knockin' you'll be able to answer!!!!!

Disclaimer: Have not completely read the thread.

I have a pistol most readily available, but my preferred tool is an AR. The pistol is quickest to get to but the rifle is accessible enough that I could have it and a plate carrier ready in about a minute. If I lived in a free state it would be the absolute go to.

A shotgun is THE MOST effective tool to use, but that doesnt make it THE BEST tool for EVERYONE. Have to include that in there before the AR guys come in here screaming and telling me the merits of their design choice, it has merits yes but we know already what buckshot does and we know what one projectile of .223 does, people make the caliber and platform issue more than what it is.
