G19 at home and away.

People can debate the effectiveness of a pistol over a long gun, but for daily carry a pistol is the only workable option for most people.

That same pistol remains the most ready and accessible when I am at home. I live very rural, so I have an AR and 870 on standby for general purposes, but I wouldn't use them inside the house as they are too cumbersome - they are mostly for dealing with things outside like varmints, predators.

At home, either my AR with a Trijcon RX-30, or one with an M6 laser/flashlight, or my G20, or a 9mm, or my .40 Shield, or my SP 10 gauge with #4 buck, or my WW II 1911.

Out and about, my Shield

Even in my home, a handgun is the only workable option.

I might as well use a bamboo cavalry lance as any non-NFA long gun in MY home. There just isn't the room to maneuver a long gun.

I'm guessing this question wasn't targeted at CCW holders since most of the answers in the poll are long guns?

Honestly, my answer is more circumstantial and environmental than anything else:

When I'm carrying at work it's a Glock 17 on my hip, and a rifle in the trunk. When I'm carrying off-duty it's a Glock 26 on the hip, worn concealed. When I'm at home it's going to be the Glock 26 on my nightstand, or the Benelli M4 or AR-15 in the closet.

At home it's a Mossberg 12ga pump. For CCW it depends on weather and clothing: a Kahr P9, PM9 or CZ P-01. All of the handguns have night sights and Crimson Trace lasergrips.

Handgun at home and otherwise that is always within reach is usually a Kel-Tec PF9 or a Taurus PT738. Whichever is not on me while I'm at home is still available. That's how I voted.

A Ruger 10/22 is also poised at home, equipped with a Tapco/Intrafuse stock and 25-round Ruger magazine.

Two revolvers are "left out", so to speak, for my wife, a non-shooter, to have access to when I'm out. Both are Taurus stainless guns, a 4-inch Model 94 and a 3-inch Model 85.

Currently either a Walther P99 or PPS. I don't currently keep a long gun loaded in the house for HD duty.

For the most part a little 3" 45 ACP works for me with the single magazine of 7 + 1. This little Kimber Ultra CDP II has proven reliable for my use. I also am not at all adverse to using a 2" S&W Model 10 38 Special. I am comfortable with either gun.

No. What other options where you looking for?

I attempt to maintain proficiency with a couple revolvers too, but an SR40c comes with me a majority of the time. My bedside gun is a Tanfoglio Witness all steel 45, but I snuggle with the Ruger.

I think this is true for most people, they just don't like to admit it...

Most people I've seen clearing a structure solo are much more efficient with a handgun than long gun. Moving, negotiating obstacles, shooting, fighting and weapon retention.

But if not clearing anything and only defending, I'd pick a long gun.

I too surmise that since long guns are mentioned that this isn't directed at EDC guns.

For HD my primary is a Canik TP9SA.

Why? Primary defensive weapons differ from person to person. Some people cannot or choose not to carry. For such people the default would be their home defense firearm, no matter what it might be. Others do carry -- even at home so their primary defensive weapon would be whatever they carry.
