After three shoulder surgeries my Weatherby 300 mag kicks a little too hard. I think I'll hand it down to one of my son's. My question is , what type of bolt action rifle is going to work best. I know I'll stick to a 270 win.I have looked at a ruger M77 and a Tikka t-3. I do like the older M695 Tikka but can't find one I like...some are beat up pretty bad. I would like to stick right around this price range. Thanks for the help .

In GR, I'll guess you're hunting whitetail in the rifle zone...
Welcome to THR!

You have a raft of options from inexpensive like the Stevens and Mossberg to the spendy like the Tikka.

My question is , what type of bolt action rifle is going to work best.

They all work, it's really just a matter of what you like.

colbysdad, I know you said you would like to stick to .270 but you may want to think about going to a quality rifle chambered in 7mm.08. Extremely light recoil with more than sufficient power to drop anything up to Elk.

For a .270 to be light recoil, you will have to have a heavier overall weight rifle. With the 7mm.08, you can have a nice light weight rifle that will not punish that sore shoulder. The Ruger M77 chambered in 7mm.08 is a very fine bolt http://www.ruger.com/products/m77HawkeyeStandard/specSheets/37123.html

For whitetails a 7-08 is just about the perfect all around gun in my opinion. Very little recoil and will easliy take deer at most any range you can shoot.

Thank you for your help. This is my first time here on THR and I appreciate the help. I'll check on that 7MM-08, it never occured to me. Yes, we do hunt in the rifle zone. This year was a little warm and no snow. Still had a great time with family and friends.

7mm/08, .308Win, or .243, are all good white tail calibers that won't punish your shoulder, and rifles such as Stevens Model 200, Mossberg 100 ATR, and Marlin X7, while inexpensive are really good rifles. And if you're in the mood for a lever action, a Marlin XLR in .308 Marlin would be a good choice.

Hey colbysdad, I work in GR, live a bit to the south east. I'll +1 the 7mm08. My old man recently got rid of his 7mm Mag and 300 win mag because of age induced recoil pains and sticks mainly to his 20 gauges now, so I can sympathize.

Deer season was a bust for me this year, too. Nothing like hunting in 45 degree weather on a sunny morning. Still have muzzle loaders to look forward to at least.

Welcome to THR.
