The recent drone swarm attack on the Russian Air Force base in Syria seems to demonstrate a significant change in air power. Insurgents were able to use a swarm of cheap disposable drones to cobbled together from cardboard and lawn mower engines to fly under and through one of the world's most sophisticated air defense networks and attack jets on the flight line.

These little drones somehow evaded or overwhelmed the radar controlled anti-aircraft auto-cannons around the base. While, I am sure our secret squirrels are hard at working coming up with a billion dollar solution, I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing pictures of Russian soldiers with VEPRs and Saiga's as a last ditch defense.

What sort of shells do you think would be best for this role? HeviShot for geese was my first thought, but then again maybe #7 bird shot is all that is needed to rip up cardboard and soldering, or do you go for buck and aim for the engine?

What do you think?

High base 3" 12ga BB steel.... but ya, the FAA will get involved. Some hobbyist whiner will get the police involved. I have a feeling that weaponized drone that would carry a substantial payload would be by comparison, huge!

Well, shoot down a drone in the USA and the FAA and local law enforcement will likely be contacting you for some jail time...
It can't be my fault if someone accidentally has flown his drone in the middle of my skeet shooting practise. How thoughtless of them.

Joking aside, some anti-hunting activists have actually used drones to harass hunters lately. It has resulted in a number of hunters bringing shotguns to be prepared to hunt crows while they're hunting other game. Accidents happen, you know...

Well, at least according to the Russian officials the attack was unsuccessful - 10 drones were attacking Khmeimim air base, of which 7 were intercepted and neutralized by either electronic jamming, or anti-aircraft missiles and the remaining 3 drones exploded outside of the base. As to the OP's question - I think that if such armed with explosives drones reach you within a shotgun range, you are pretty much dead anyway...

A base I was working at overseas had gotten reports of an unauthorized quad copter. Each patrol vehicle was outfitted with a mil issue Mossberg 590 full of buckshot (because that was all we had besides hatten rounds) with the orders to shoot these things down on sight. Unfortunately, the alleged drone was never spotted by security personnel, so no report on the effectiveness or lack thereof.
