What makes a "qualifed teacher"

This is a pretty open ended question but what makes a qualified teacher in your minds.

There are basically two kinds of people who need teaching... the complete beginner and those who know guns but want to be able to shoot much better than they can now.

Two different skill sets... two different teachers?

How about the top five "necessities" for each type of teacher...

The "newbie" instructor...

Newbie

1. Patience
2. stickler for safety
3. ability to work with many kinds of people
4. well organized material and the ability to stick to a lesson plan.
5. good knowledge of firarms in order to assist newbies in selection of weapon.

Oldie.
1. All of the above.
2. Tactical knowledge.
3. Combat expereince
4. Participant in competition.
5. Ability to use a wide range of teaching techniques and to see where advanced students need an emphasis.

knowing how to shoot...

the ability to talk to people in ways that they can understand

oh yea knowing how to shoot

the teacher has to enjoy what they are doing it works better

and most important ... knowing how to shoot...

I have found that good teachers are similar regardless of the subject matter. They are experts in their field. They have no need to show off to their students. They teach the student what the student needs to learn.

A good teacher gives tools and lets the student experiment.

The basic requirements:

Expert in one's field
Broad range of experience both in the subject and with people
Gracious, well mannered, articulate
Wise, circumspect
Stays up to speed on subject: laws, permits, ammo, guns, history, techniques, and how people learn
Loves teaching
Loves teaching the level of student he or she teaches
Values what is practical and useful over current fashions

A beginning student needs just as much expertise as the advanced. Habits are formed early. It's much harder to correct bad habits than it is to learn a new skill.

An already excellent teacher can learn a new skill and teach it to others.

A skilled shooter isn't necessarily a good teacher.

At the range where I go, the instructor for the beginners is, by far, a better teacher than the instructor who teaches the advanced class.

Good teachers in any subject are rare and much appreciated.
