Hey guys, I'm not too knowledgeable about Smiths, so if you could help me out and tell me what this is that would be great:

Its up for sale in my area for $500 and I'm considering purchasing it.

    My guess is its a S&W 686.

    Thanks in advance,

Looks like a early model 66 to me. Stainless sights came on the first edition.

That would be a decent price for one too.

Looks like a 66 but not very early, the barrel is not pinned.

Good catch Craig.. Light was wrong and back sight looked to be stainless, but you're durn sure right.

Still a good gun at a reasonable price. I carry model 19 that ain't pinned or recessed and ain't hurt myself a bit.

$500 would be a good price in my area. Generally price goes up as the barrel gets shorter.

    Not P&R but still pre-lock & pre-MIM.

Made sometime between '83 & mid 90s. A dash number or serial number would nail it down a bit more closely.
