I saw online tonight that VA isn't going to accept my permit from Florida after February 1st. Are there any non resident permits I can that will allow me carry legally while there?

I saw where it said open carry is legal does that require a permit? I'm going Spotsylvania County if that matters at all? I prefer concealed carry but want to legally armed while there. I know I can apply for a non res permit from there. However it's expensive and I may not have it in time. Thanks.

Open carry is legal in Virginia without a permit.

Spotsylvania County is not a high-crime area. You don't really need to be armed there unless you are trying to make a statement.

You don't need to be armed anywhere, until you do need to be. Just like a seatbelt. You don't need it till you do.

Either that is old news about the Dec 2015-Feb 2016 dust-up, or something has changed.

Virginia State Police is still showing this as of tonight:

    http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_Reciprocity.shtm

    Reciprocity and Recognition

Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit Reciprocity and Recognition

As of July 1, 2016, pursuant to Virginia Code Section 18.2-308.014, the holder of a valid concealed handgun or concealed weapon permit or license issued by another state may carry a concealed handgun in Virginia provided all of the below conditions are met:

The holder of such permit or license is at least 21 years of age.
The permit or license holder carries a valid photo-identification issued by a government agency of any state or by the U.S. Department of Defense or U.S. Department of State.
The holder displays the permit or license and the government issued photo-identification upon demand by a law-enforcement officer.
The permit or license holder has not previously had a Virginia concealed handgun permit revoked.

Although the law requires Virginia to grant recognition to all states that issue permits, those states may not authorize Virginia permit holders to possess a firearm in their state.

Prior to traveling citizens should contact a representative of the state they intend to travel through to determine if that state will recognize their Virginia resident or non-resident concealed carry permit, or visit that state’s website for guidance.

If you give us the link a VA resident should be able to confirm whether it is currently valid or old news. However, I suspect, as Carl Brown stated, it is simply old news.

This is misleading. The training requirements can be completed online. The notarized application (hard copy) has to be submitted to the local circuit court (for residents) or to the Virginia State Police (for nonresidents).

I got my non-resident Virginia permit last year. I applied in February and it wasn’t issued until June, it isn’t a quick turnaround option. I was surprised it took so long, especially given that when Virginia CHPs changed from may issue to shall issue in 1995 I was a Virginia resident and my CHP was issued in less than three weeks. I applied the first day the courts were open after the law went into effect July 1, 1995.
