What percent of the pop. has CHL/CCW (by State)

Sounds small, but 1% means that in a crowd off 100, there's someone packing a permit at least, if not heat.

Better than nothing.

I'd hazard a guess that 2% of eligible adults in Texas have their CHL. That doesn't seem like a small number to me.
 
what I'd be curious to see is the comparison between the percentage of eligible adults who have a chl versus the percentage of population who are currently incarcerated.
 
2001 census has Utahs population at 2, 269,789.

Permits as of Sept 31, 2003, 56,167.

That's 2.47%.

We have 1,379,043 people that are 21 or older. So, on the basis of age alone, 4.07% have a permit.

There are 19,467 people who are institutionalized in Utah
 
i dont know about the entire state, but for anchorage, with a population of approximately 280,000, of which 2/3s are 21 or older (thus eligible as far as age is concerned), leaves 187,000.
the last known reports indicate 17,000 CHL's have been issued in Anchorage alone. that would indicate about 9% of anchorages adults have a CHL.
 
We discussed this sorta subject last year - good few months back now. I got some figures ... but damned if I remember where from ..... I did tho ask in Sheriff's office about current uptake .. and that was given (about a year ago) as around 100 per month (that was a sample over 2 months) .. just my county. And the pop is roughly 50,000.

Anyways ... seemed like overall statewide takeup is in the order of near 6% .... somewhere above half a million in a state approx pop of 9 million. Might try a search and see if i can dig up that other thread .. may have the info I have forgotten.

Minnesota has roughly 5 million residents; About 1.2 million are under 18. (The permit age is 21; that's the best data I could find quickly, so let's guess 1.4 million are under 21.)

There were 12,000 permit holders under the old, may-issue law.
In the 9 months since shall-issue passed, 15,000 more have been issued, but presumably some of the old ones expried, so I estimate that about 24,000 permits are currently issued.

To make a short story long, that means about 2/3 of 1%, or one in 150 Minnesota adults, has a permit.

I know we can do better, folks. It's for the children!
 
heh... San Francisco: population about 700,000 people. And a grand total of eight! CCW holders... yours truly included.

49 square miles of absolute weirdness and only eight of of us... the mind boggles...


I think we should form a bowling team...
 
Of the 1%+ of the Texans that do have the CHL, my interaction with same via renewal clases leads me to guestimate the following: Approx. 1/3 carry on-bod most of the time. Approx. 1/3 carry in vehicle most of the time. And the other 1/3 carry "only some places, usually just when traveling". :(
 
Indiana permits are valid for a period of 4 years.
Here's a chart from the ISP's annual report giving the number of permits issued over a 4 year period.

318,504 total permits were issued.
Indiana's population is about 6.2 million. About 4.6 million are old enough to qualify for a permit.

A little over 5% of Indiana's total population (about 7% of the eligible population) are licensed.
 
As of last June 30, Michigan had issued about 85,000 permits. At last year's rate, we probably have around 100,000 now. With a population of about 10 million, that a 1% rate. It'll probably top out at 1.5-2% eventually.
 
I dont know about the entire state of Washington, but my local paper just printed a story on cwp for Kitsap Co. last Saturday. They state "the total number of persons allowed to carry a concealed weapon in Kitsap County climbs to 10,458."
According to the US Census web page, we have a population of 233,372 of which 163,360 are 21 and over. So appx 6% of our county population has a licence.

Michigan topped 100,000 permits in Sept, according to the State Police. I did an article on it at the time.
 
I remember American Guardian (I think, maybe not) did a piece on Texas gun owners where they were saying that about 8 million Texans were armed. The article was talking specifically on how many women were starting to legally carry.
 
Three years ago, when I was trying to get these kind of numbers for a brochure for state legislators, I called all of the shall-issue states. At that time, Texas was at the low end with 1% of the population having permits, while Indiana (IIRC) was at the high end at 5 or 6%. The average for all of the states I contacted was 1.7%.

Some states had no idea at all how many permit holders they had, so that makes it hard to get a good average.
