Okay, so this may not be true but this morning while having breakfast at the local diner I over heard that there was an escaped male gorilla from the Hampton Zoo. Having been to the zoo before I was not really suprised and at first thought it was kind of funny for about 6 seconds, but then I got to thinking that those things are big and can be dangerous...soooooo then I got to thinking, " what would I do if faced with an angry gorilla?"

I usually carry my USP 40 with hydro-shocks but of course today I only had my BUG P-32 with me. I had to wonder, would 12 rounds of 40 put down a full grown hungry and possibly angry gorilla? Would 7 rounds of 32acp?

I searched the web and found no mention in the news of an escaped gorilla so you can all sleep soundly, bt it does beg the question...WWYD?

Many countries use either AK's or FAL's for Guerrilla insurgancies.

well there are several species of gorilla. What species are we reffering to here, there are larger species then others and some are more aggressive than others. I would think that a 30 caliber pistol round and up would do just fine, just depends on how good a shot you are. If it were me I think I would probably use my USP .45acp or .357mag. It still all about shot placement, you could stop the animal if you shoot it with a .22lr as long as you place your shots well enough to knock out its CNS. Atleast these would work for a CCW, unless you want to walk around with a loaded shotgun or AK.

I'd say a tranq would be the way to go.

But for the sake of having a dumb idea, emptying 20 rounds of .308 in the general direction of said gorilla would probably solve the problem.

You probably could get away with a warning shot they tend to discourage pretty easily. I would not bet on stopping a full grown male gorilla with a handgun. I've never hunted one but my wife works with gorillas and chimps everyday (the chimps are the ones that should really worry about they don't discourage and they really do want to kill you) and gorillas tend tend to be more bark than bite.

There has never been a recorded instance of someone being killed by a gorilla. I have never heard of someone even being attacked by one. The same goes for wolves... never in human history has a person been killed by a wild wolf (I don't know about the captive ones). A .32 would stop a gorilla, but why would you want to? Such wonderful animals. Everyone seems to be so concerned with 'stopping power'. That is all everyone talks about... have you noticed? As for me, I am going to lay down and bleed regardless if I am hit with a .38 or a .45. Perhaps we should all think more how we would get the gorilla back safely in captivity without hurting him, rather than how afraid we are of being torn apart by a wild beast, without a cannon to protect us.

IIRC, I read an article in the '60s espousing the Ruger .44 Mag carbine as the weapon of choice for hunting mountain gorillas. The article warned that (no S***) you didn't want a weapon with too long a barrel because if you got too close to the gorilla he might seize it and beat you to death with it! :what:

    Escaped Gorilla

Susie Homemaker spies an escaped gorilla in the top of her Maple tree on day whilst watchin' Y&R on the TV. In a panic, she looks in the Yellow Book and finds Joe-Bob's Gorilla Removal Service...and makes the call.

Guy shows up in a truck with a big cage on board...a shotgun...a pair of handcuffs...a ladder...and a snarling, spring-loaded Pitbull. After surveying the situation, he decides that it's a legitimate call, and advises Susie that she does indeed, have a gorilla problem.

"Yep. That's a big Silverback allrighty, but we can handle this...Noooo sweat!
But, my helper called in sick, so I'll need you to help me."

Apprehensive, Susie askes what she has to do...

"Well, here's how it works. You hold the shotgun and the cuffs. I climb the ladder and knock the gorilla off'n that limb he's perched on. The dog is highly trained, and works with split-second timing. He'll grab the big monkey by the
privates, immobilizing him. You cuff the gorilla while I'm on my way back down the ladder...and I'll put him in the cage while the dog holds him still. Got it?"

"Got it!" she replies, still a little nervous. Joe-Bob starts up the ladder...

    "Wait! What's the shotgun for?"

Joe slaps himself on the temple and replies:

"Dang! Almost forgot. If the gorilla knocks me off the ladder...shoot that damn dog."

I'd probably go with a few big boxes of twinkies, maybe some marshmallows, and a cell phone.

Don't know what caliber it was, but Chuck says if you hit them in the chest, it will knock a Gorilla back 10 foot.
