What round for escaped Gorilla?

IIRC, most zoo's keep a 416 or 458 for putting down escaped DG. They also keep shotguns loaded with shot for less-than-DG.

I see the self righteous posters who claimed there has never been a wolf or gorilla attack have scurried under a rock or something:neener:

I was going to post some links but do not need to now thanks all who did.

I still think that everyone involved would be better off if folks just stood back and bombarded the critter with twinkies or marshmallows... I've used marshmallows to good effect when confronted with a frontal charge by a troupe of raccoons while on a camping trip. Oh, the carnage...

That's the same reason why, if I go bear hunting with a friend of mine, my backup gun is gonna be a .22... I figure if I slow him down and he's waving and screaming and stuff, the bear will go for him...

What hoghunting said. It took Dallas Police 3 rounds of .458 and 2 rounds of 12ga slug to completely stop the silverback at the Dallas Zoo. Dallas Police have 2 .458's at the substation close to the Zoo just for such an emergency. Ther are no other firearms at the Zoo.

'I see the self righteous posters who claimed there has never been a wolf or gorilla attack have scurried under a rock or something'

Hey, that is me! I am self-righteous? I am just surprised at the vindictive urge to kill that I witness on the High Road. I repeat, there has never been a recorded instance of a person being killed by a gorilla in all of recorded history. And people don't realize the habits of Male gorillas (and chimps, for that matter). The male when trying to threaten, protect his turf, when nervous, etc will scramble foward to the threat, beat his chest (really), wave his arms in the air and let out howls... all meant to intimidate. They ALWAYS back off. Captive gorillas that escape are often said to "attack"... this is just their blustering nature. Some are killed for it. As for wolves, I stand corrected. I guess there has been a recent killing, but I do not know the circumstances. I was just going on what I knew up to 1990 or so (I got my PhD in 1972 on wolf studies).
My point is just that, why kill? I suppose all you macho gun owners want stopping power and a reason to shoot... nothing more, just an excuse. As for me, I believe in shot placement and calm reasoning. I guess that makes me self righteous... damn

I live amongst wild animals bigger than any gorilla with no problems. Just let it run around and see what happens. Life will be more interesting that way. IMHO Texas stopped being interesting when they killed the last of the fighting Indians and cracked down on the outlaws.

I would use some type of bi-plane with machineguns.

And in my best Shatner voice, yell out, "KONGGGGG!!!"

A PIAT would probably do the job.

"I am just surprised at the vindictive urge to kill that I witness on the High Road."
Not so much an urge to kill as a thread-long joke. Like the drive-by thread.

In Johannesburg, 1997, Max the gorilla was instrumental in apprehending an armed suspect who was fleeing from the police and made the mistake of going to the zoo, specifically the gorilla cage. The gorilla bit the suspect and the suspect shot the gorilla twice. Both were hospitalised. IIRC the gorilla had a CT scan at my hospital. Sadly that gorilla died in 2004.

If it was me, and having seen these animals up close, I would not use anything less than a 12 gauge with Brenneke slugs.

According to a friend who works at the Dallas Zoo, the Dallas police got a bit carried away with the gorilla, "Jabari". The zoo and the police department have procedures for dealing with dangerous animals, but these were not followed that day. The police came charging in and as keepers were shouting "don't shoot, don't shoot" they opened fire, note that the police charged the gorilla, not the other way around, as was reported. Jabari had hurt four people in his rush to escape, but had calmed down and the keepers felt the crisis had passed and "Jabari" could have been safely returned to his exhibit. They were very upset at the actions of the police.

But, it does go to show just how tough a gorilla can be, and "Jabari" was a young 300# male and not yet full grown.

In the zoo where I work a female gorilla attacked a keeper, who fortunately survived thanks to the intervention of the male silverback who smacked the female upside the head and herded her back into her enclosure!

As for,
...there has never been a recorded instance of a person being killed by a gorilla in all of recorded history.
I guess that may be correct if you don't count natives who live in the same areas as gorillas. I have never heard of an unprovoked gorilla killing, but they certainly have killed when surprised or threatened. And wolves in Europe and Asia have accounted for thousands of deaths over the centuries. It doesn't happen in Europe anymore, but wolf attacks are actually rising in India. There are plenty of documented cases of attacks from here in the US too.

And I don't think anyone here is bloodthirsty, its just a fun thread :)

well there are several species of gorilla.

No, just two. Gorilla gorilla and G. beringei.

Procedure wasn't followed for two main reasons. First, there were none of the ranking staff present at the zoo at the time of the escape that were supposed to handle such an event, nor were the responding police the ones who had coordinated the plan with the ranking zoo officials. Second, zoo staff present at the time were unable to do anything to stop Jabari. In the amount of time it took for police to arrive and then eventually shoot the animal, zoo staff were unable to get a functional tranq. gun on location and fire a single shot even though zoo staff were already on scene (it is their workplace) and supposedly had plans in place to handle such matters. They may not have wanted the animal put down, but their lack of preparedness resulted in arriving police being able to encounter a completely uncontrolled animal that had already hurt people.

.44 mag

.44 mag all the way 300 gr Hornady xtp 6 from my S&W or 8 from my Desert Eagle nothing short of 1000 pounds will survive.
Did I read 800 pounds...
according to wikipedia they hardly reach 600 and thats obese which would of course be in the shooters favor also the fact that this is a zoo animal not a wild one.
However in a city I probably would say logically the tranquilizer is the safest for everyone else.
This ammo when tested at 20 degrees F after being frozen for a season went through 3 1/2 inches into frozen green birch it was expanded to .90 inches

Rembrant, now THAT is a masterpeice!:D

Saturday, I had the dubious pleasure of firing a Desert Eagle 50AE. As Dr Rob would say, Yowsah!! My hand is still sore, and that is only after 3 rds! I think that would make good gorilla medicine... on either side of the gun!

Skipping the giants and the traditional, I'll choose the gorilla. ... If you threaten his group he will charge, and a charging gorilla is a fearful spectacle. To stand your ground with a handgun and flatten him at 15 feet is man's work.

You wusses with your .458 and your 12 gauges.

Where are the REAL MEN for doing MAN'S WORK?

Personally I would just put him in a sleeper hold.
