What scope do I want to put on a new Savage 12 BVSS?

I just ordered on in .223, with the accu-trigger of course, and I am hoping it shoots as well as people say. I am mainly going to be shooting paper targets and the occasional varmint, but won't be doing any serious hunting with a rifle like that.

I don't want to spend more than $600 on glass. I would like a fine reticle.

What do you suggest?

I Like Leupold and Nikon

I have 3 BVSS' and two VLP's. The Vlp is just like the BVSS with a lower profile stock and the larger bolt handle. You will like your new rifle. I Have a 6x18 Leupold on one , a 6.5X20 on another a fixed 24 on another and a Nikon Monarch 6.5x20 on one of my 204s. I haven't put a scope on my other 204 yet but, when I do, it will probably be another Nikon 6.5x20. It is, by far, the brightest scope that I have. Don't get me wrong, I like my Leupolds, I have 6 or 7 of them but I really like the Nikon. You can find them on Gunbroker.com for about $300. I will say that the price the other guy gave you on that leupold is pretty good. Both the Nikons and the Leupolds have lifetime guarantees.

I got a good look at shepard scopes last week and that guy made me a beilever! I'll be getting one calibrated for 308 as my next scope.

Just went through this with my 12BVSS in win .243. I went with a scope that would appear to fit your criteria perfectly, and I am 110% pleased with the purchase. Topped it with a Nikon Monarch UCC Long Range 6.5-20x44mm AO w/ fine crosshair from MidwayUSA for $470, or about the same price as the new gun for a nice 50/50 split. Has everything I was seeking, right down to the exit pupil size and reticle subtension width. Just barely nixed out the Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40mm. In other words, I actually educated myself on the finite specs that most people just glass over in the back of the books and compared closely, not to mention going to many stores and actually looking through them, outside, viewing at the distances you're expecting to shoot at - very important!

And ya know what - brighter is not better, and bigger is not better (at least as far as scopes go ). One of the most important specs is contrast. And as far as 100% no hassle warranty for a lifetime with a company that will back it up - Leupold ain't the only one anymore...

Nortonics that is the same scope that I have on my Savage 12 VLP in 204 Ruger. Great combination and, as I said, I like it better than my Leupolds.

A few weeks ago I bought my first Savage - also a 12BVSS in .223. In limited use it has already proved to be an incredibly accurate rifle! I reload and mostly use match type bullets.

For now the 12BVSS is "borrowing" my Weaver V16 from my 10/22. A pretty decent scope but for the budget you have I would be more inclined to get something like the Nikon mentioned above. In fact I may upgrade to the Nikon 6.5 - 20X later.

I also have a Leupold Vari-XIII in 6.5 -20X , it sees use on my 700 in .223. But if the Savage keeps shooting like it did last weekend it may "win" the use of the Leupold!

I don't know how well your 700 shoots but if you Savage shoots as well as mine does the Remmy will see less daylight and more time in the safe. My 223will shoot 5 shot groups under 1/2" all day long, with several under the 3/8" mark. And I do mean all day long, I have even started to believe that it likes being hot. Honestly, I have abused that poor thing. My 204 has taken the pressure off the 223 cause it started out shooting sub 3/8" groups.

hmmm , this is a toughy. If you can use the shepperd scopes, that would be my top choice. But a Nikon high powered with a side focus, would be very tough to beat.

Well here are a couple of the 12BVSS Savage groups from last weekend , and this was with no real load development for this rifle as you can see by the round count listed on the targets. And this was with the Weaver V16 at 10X.


My 700LTR shoots very well but it has given me fits with the freakin' fliers! There have been some incredible 4 shot groups with it. The best target I ever fired was still with an old 700 VLS that I no longer own but this new Savage looks like it might soon hold the honors! And my Remmy has the advantage of a Jewell trigger set in the 5 to 6 oz range where the Savage has the 2.25 lbs AccuTrigger trigger , which is pretty darn good for out of the box.

Not to steal the thread, but is it me or is the savage website wrong about magazine capacity? It says 4 rounds for Savage 12 from .223 to .308. However, I can fit 6 rounds into my Savage 12.

I have a Savage 12VLP and 10FLP, both in 223 and both are wearing Bushnell Elite 3200 scopes. The 10 has a 5-15x40 while the 12 wears a 7-21x40. I've been extremely pleased with these scopes as they hold their POI and seem very durable to me. The model 12 was wearing an Elite 3200 10x scope but that did not have an adjustable objective so I replaced it. Nevertheless, the 10x is still an excellent scope and even held its POI after removing and remounting the scope when I tried a Leupold which, by the way, I didn't care for too much and which I wound up selling to get the 7-21x Bushnell.

With regards to the previous post about magazine capacity, that had me curious too. Savage states these mags hold 4 rounds but my 12 and 10 both will hold 5 in their mags. I have since converted my 12 to single shot since it is only used for BR shooting.

I just ordered a new Nikon Buckmaster 6x18x40 through ebay for $241 delivered. I tried to talk myself into the Monarch, but have two other Buckmasters and this was a very good price. I'm not sure if it's going on the Savage 10 FP 223 or the CZ 527 Varmint 204. We'll see.
