I'm in Arkansas and today I'm taking the class. I know I can take my gun on a road trip but other states will be cool about it sence I have a permit?
I dant leave Arkansas much but when I do I'd like to protect myself, but don't want to get pulled over and end up in jail in another state cuz I have a gun in my wasteband. Would also like to know about any open carry laws in other states

Illinois. Wisconsin for now, but that will probably change.

    • Just because another state has legal CCW, that doesn't mean that it recognizes your Arkansas credential. Ohio and Pennsylvania both have legal CCW. You can't lawfully carry concealed in the other state with only your home state's credential. There's no reciprocity. You could get a non-resident credential from a third state, in addition to your home state's.
    • In addition to reciprocity, you MUST know the relevant laws of any state into which or through which you carry concealed. Ohio requires you to use a pocket holster when carrying in a pocket in a vehicle, but NOT when on foot. I'll bet Arkansas doesn't have that law.
    • Open carry law is just as varied as concealed carry law. It's COMPLETELY legal in Ohio. It's also completely legal in Pennsylvania... except in Philadelphia where it's legal, but you MUST have a PA credential to carry AT ALL. Also in certain places where open carry is completely legal, police will UNLAWFULLY harass open carriers.

You are correct to be concerned about the wild change in laws that take place when you step from one State to another.

I almost want to make a youtube clip of some guy jumping back and forth across a line painted in the road singing "Lawful! Felony! Lawful! Felony!" as he hops back and forth with various things.

Yeah, it's that ridiculous. Standing on one side of a line with the wrong thing (or the right thing with the wrong papers) can get you 10 years in the clink.

Stay away from IL ifyou're carrying. We, here in the Land of Lincoln and the convict governors, are not smart enough to protect ourselves. Chicago politicians and democrat governors protect us from ourselves.

You might want to steer clear of NJ.

Do you mean no issue or no requirement? AK does not require a permit but will issue you one for reciprocity purposes. AZ the same way as of last July.

With an Arkansas resident permit, you are legal to carry in 38 states; this document (.pdf) has a map that shows which states do and do not honor your permit.

As has been said, familiarize yourself with the laws of whatever state you will be visiting before you carry there.

CA is shown as a "may issue"...but getting a CC permit is well nigh impossible for average Joe in most counties. It should be labeled as "not likely".

Definately stay out of New Jersey with your handgun unless it is in the trunk unlocked and you are passing through to another state.

CA is changing. Most counties will issue for "personal protection".
That said, you have a better chance at getting a CA CCW permit than a CCW permit in HI, NJ or NY.

Not to throw dirt in the game, but not only are there varying laws state to state, but some states do not have preemption laws meaning counties and cities can pass restrictions to the state carry laws, and those of us who travel across Indian lands have to abide by tribal cc laws as well. http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/tribal_law_ccw.pdf has some good info on that. handgunlaw.us has about the best consolidation of data I have found. Any time I am traveling I check there and http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/ for current laws. If there is any question I will also go to the website of the state where I will traveling.

It's a matter of knowing the law so you can protect yourself.

BTW here is a cc bill in the Illinois house, but before anyone gets excited, our socialist governor promised several years ago to veto any cc bills presented to him.

Yes he did, but with enough votes his veto won't matter....so we keep on the phones and talking to those elected officials that are on the fence.
