I know that all of us have a list of stupid things that we have done. Let's come clean and have a few laughs. I could write a book on this subject.

We were on our way to a farm 60 miles from home to hunt turkeys. We had driven my truck the previous afternoon to scout and possibly roost some birds. The next morning my buddy, Skivey, offered to drive his truck. Half way there it dawned on me that I might have left my shotgun in my truck. Sure enough. When we got to the farm I was gunless. No big deal. Skivey, had never killed a bird so I would call for him. No Luck.

On our way home Skivey offered to buy me breakfast at a fine restaurant that was known for really good food. When we arrived he discovered that he had left his wallet at his home. We had driven 60 miles, me with no gun and him without a non-resident hunting license, driver's license, ID of any kind and no money. I had to buy breakfast and drive home.

I managed to get off work early for deer opening. Rushed home, got changed, threw my gear and rifle in the trunk, and blazed out to the hunting area, about 2 hours before dusk. Jumped out of my car, left the keys in the ignition, and managed to lock myself out of my car & trunk. Had to call my wife and sit there and wait for her to drive out and deliver a second set of keys; she didn't arrive until after dusk.

ammo, yeah, you kind of need it!

will never buy a wildcat cartridge in my life because of one hunting trip...

I was into the second hour of a three our trip to our place when my wife called and asked why I had left the cabin and gate keys sitting by the kitchen sink. Doh!

The gates now have combo locks and the cabin key now lives on my key ring.

Do you mean you won't buy a gun that shoots a wildcat cartridge? The pause at the end of the sentence just peeks my curiosity since I've been trying to load for the 5.7mm Johnson wildcat for the last 30 years.

What Stupid things have you done?

Followed my usual procedure of field stripping and removing the stocks and firing pin from a newly acquired steel handgun to clean it thoroughly with non-chlorinated brake cleaner. I ended up peeling significant chunks of the painted finish right off of a sweet looking CZ82 slide and frame. Only happened once, though ...

Thought I was cool taking my 1860 Henry (Uberti) to the gun range. I could tell that folks were checking it out. I then proceeded to load it with the cartridges upside down. I didn't look so cool unloading all 12 rounds.

I lost my wedding ring hanging tree stands at a friend's farm. Took it off and put it in my pocket (or so I thought) so it wouldn't get scratched up. Awkward moments when (1) I discovered it was missing, (2) had to explain it to my wife, and (3) had to buy another ...

I know a couple guys who "plea-bargained away" false DV charges under advice from their respective attorneys, resulting in their 2A rights being forever removed. I know both wish they could do that over again.

My old buddy Tom and I hunted for 42 years mostly duck and goose hunting. Well Tom had a goosepit and one morning we are in a rush as usual and load up the guns in cases into truck. We get to the pit pass out the guns and Tom has a 20 ga and no 20 ga shells!! As I recall not much flew that morning so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Another time we were going duck hunting loaded everything up including dog in the kennel in back of truck. In our haste we get to blind everything ready to go--No Dog!! over the years I have forgotten many things but have not forgotten Tom, he passed away in 2014 from liver cancer. Tom and I sat in blinds and pits waiting endlessly for a duck or goose. His favorite saying was "you have to suffer to kill ducks"! it was pleasurable suffering with my old friend!

RIP Old Buddy!

I once bought some 147 grain 9mm JHPs. I dumped them into one of my plastic bins and mis-labeled them as 115 grain JHPs. I didn't use them for a couple of years. One day, after running out of my last batch of 115 grain bullets, I dug into them and started using them with a load I had previously worked up that was pretty close to a max load of power pistol for a 115 grain bullet. Luckily for me, they didn't feel quite right so I weighed a couple before I got more than 2 or three rounds done. I don't know what the damage could have been but I suspect it could have ended badly.

Drive half an hour to the only public range in Ontario. Only to find I had left the rifle's bolt at home.

Got to range. No tape. No Stapler. No way to hang targets. Couldn't borrow any from someone else because said "range" was out in the desert about 40 miles from home. I did get some shooting in, but couldn't shoot any of the load-workup loads.

I’ve done plenty of stupid things, but this is a story my dad told me about himself. He said when he was 12 or 14 years old, his dad (my grandad) had an old 10-gauge double. One day, my dad’s friend bet him a nickel or something that dad wouldn’t pull both triggers at the same time.

Well, dad took the bet. But he walked over and put his back against a nearby tree trunk. Then he put the shotgun’s butt under his armpit and against the tree trunk.

When it went off, it came straight up, blackened both of dad’s eyes, broke his nose, and broke its own buttstock. Of course when grandad found out about it, dad got a few more bruises.

“But I won the nickel” dad said.:D

My best friend managed to load a Burt's Bee's lip balm ( think Chap stick ) into a Stevens .410 pump shotgun during a squirrel hunting trip. Loaded it into the magazine and pumped it into the gun after the first shot. It took a wooden dowel and a mallet to remove it.

I melted the grips on a CZ82 with citrus-based spray cleaner. Yeah, like you, I never did that again. Odd that we both did something similar with the same sort of gun.

Tried to dismantle the firing mechanism of a Remington model 14....outside....on a picnic table....in the middle of the yard....

Never did find that plunger, even with a big magnet. I did find the spring....eventually.

Gun related, I let my now ex wife talk me into selling off my guns shortly after we got married, including a P220 and a Gold Cup. The P220 has been replaced. I've also driven to the gun club we belong to, an hour's drive, with no ammo other than what I pre-loaded in magazines. The friend I was with was a pretty good sport about it.
Not gun related, don't ask.
