I drew only one tag this year. A very coveted (for me) archery deer tag. My wife drew a rifle cow elk tag in the same unit. My kids drew nothing, this is the first year of my hunting career that I did not draw a single rifle tag. I think the new draw system for Colorado is going to be the end of any easy draws in this state.

It'll be interesting to see what is on the left over list that gets posted tomorrow 8-1.

I got my landowners permits yesterday.
One antlerless/ one either sex permit for archery, and the same for firearm.
Always a relief to get them.
Now im waiting for fall archery turkey and fall shotgun turkey permits.
I will buy an otc archery permit so i can hunt statewide also.

I only drew an archery permit but it was for an area with only 5 total permits. There's a good number of deer there also.

My granddaughter drew everything she put in for, 5 for 5. Now I have to coerce her to take me as a guest. That may be a given since she has to have an adult with her and her dad is too much into his stuff .. plus he's a poor hunter. He was playing Gameboy when I was trying to teach him about reading sign, using the wind, etc.

To folks living in the East, they have NO idea a bout "drawing a tag" compared to those of us who lived out West

That is true. I can archery hunt for deer or bear for 5 weeks beginning in mid September and rifle hunt from mid October to mid January in most of the state. There are a few quota hunts in areas that require a drawing. But the deadline to apply isn't until Sept 1. I'll apply sometime in the next week or 2.

I hit the jackpot last year and got picked for a very popular area 15 minutes from the house, twice. They have one hunt in late October that I picked as my 1st choice, and the same spot in November as my 2nd choice. Quota was 1000 for each hunt. About 1500 people applied for the 1st hunt and I was picked. But since less than 1000 even applied for the late hunt I got drawn for it too. That happened once before years ago. I don't always get picked for the early hunt, but there has only been 1 year that I applied when I didn't get picked for either.

Not a lot of monster deer here, but the success rate is better than average. I watched a lot of deer, but nothing I wanted. I did take a small 4 point (Eastern count) on the last day of the 2nd hunt.

If nothing drastic happens I'm going to Colorado and buying an OTC elk tag for either 2nd or 3rd season this year. I've narrowed my decision down to 4-5 units. I've been trying to make this happen for the last several years, but life keeps getting in the way. Looks like it will happen this time.

I got 1 buck and 5 antlerless tags for our place in WI. Hopefully I'll see some deer lol!

Also was fortunate enough to tag out with a double, bagging two real nice Toms in May.

May try to get a fall gobbler tag this year.

Be well folks

i just get my bow and rifle tags witch are ether or buck and doe and a bear tag. ny have kinda a lottery with there dmp. deer management program. tags in the areas u can use the u pay $10 each time twice a year. we always get them since we have the highest deer pop in new york here.

Luckily I live where the limit is 10 antler less and 2 bucks, but 1 of the bucks has to have 4 points or more , i can't remember the last time i shot a buck, I just look for a doe or 2. We can "tag" our deer with our cell phones now and get a comfirmation # for your harvest. I haven't tagged out in years.

Nothing. I drew no tags this year. Thank you for bringing up such a painful subject. While your at it why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it.

:D

Hopefully next year. I'm getting close on limited entry deer to enough points to get a pretty good area if I wanted.

Matt

I remember years like that in NV as well; oh you got an extra point for next year, big whup.....When I lived there, an antelope tag could be APPLIED for once every 5 years; an elk tag was once in a lifetime as were all of the mountain goat and sheep tags. IF you drew one of those and were unsuccessful, you had to wait 5 years before even trying to apply for another one.

well that sucks. your welcome to come over here and hunt anytime.

I drew a cow elk tag in my preferred area, an off-National Forest muley buck tag and a buck antelope tag in my second choice area.

I didn't draw a bull tag in my preferred elk area (somewhat expected), and didn't draw a buck antelope tag in my preferred area (unexpected).

I'll be buying a general tag for elk so that I can have a chance, albiet not as good of a chance in the general areas, at a bull during archery and early rifle seasons. If I don't get a bull I'll just wait until late November after the cows herd up to go find a meat cow in my main area.

Put in for a weekend muzzleloader hunt last night. Got about 30% odds of being drawn.

I guess I’ve got nothing to complain about. I’ve drawn two of the three hardest critters in the lower 48. Rocky Mt Goat, Shiras Moose and am still waiting for a bighorn tag. But gosh it’s frustrating some years!

Sounds like a pretty banner year to me! Moose is my top aspiration hunting wise, but it takes like 10 preference points around here in WY to get on the board...

My wife drew 2 moose and a sheep license in Wyoming back in the late '70s. She got both moose but struck out on the bighorn.

Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it sometime after my wife's health gets better. As of now I can't travel out of state very readily. Hopefully in the next year or two.

Bummer about the tags but a +10 for the Princess Bride quote.

Mule deer tags and elk are draw only here but I don't even try.

I can usually get a general buck deer tag 2 out of 3 years, but in sub-optimal areas. Not bad areas, but usually in the west desert where the deer are more sparse and there's lots of open space. And all of the bucks disappear about a week before the rifle hunt starts. My guess is that they have food, water, TVs, internet, and card games setup in some of the abandoned mines and spend the hunt in there. :) Ok, maybe no the card games. Too hard to do without opposable thumbs. :D

As for the Princess Bride quote: I'm a software engineer so Princess Bride and Monty Python quotes are legal requirements for working in this career path.

It took 12 years to draw the goat tag, that was 4 years ago. It took 16 years to draw the moose tag. That was two years ago. But yeah it would be a banner year if I’d drawn those in the same year!!:)

I drew 159,621 hog tags. Doubt I'll be able to fill 'em, but you never know. :D

The draw lotto hasn't hit Texas.......yet. Hope it never does. I didn't realize that western states were drawing for DEER now. I wonder if New Mexico does? I used to just drive up to Carlsbad and get a room, drive to a discount store and get an out of state license, and I was good for mulie. Next stop was Queens, NM. :D Might not be able to do that anymore, but I'm too old to go trapsing across that rough country, anyway, and Lord help me if I had to drag a big mulie out of one of those canyons! That nearly killed me when I was in my early 40s. Now, I'd need a helicopter.

Wow that brings back some memories! You are describing my exact old stomping grounds when I lived in Artesia NM back in the mid 90’s. The metropolis of Queens was a central meeting point to either head off into Crow flats, Guadalupe Peak or into the tops up to Pinnon NM. That used to be some great deer and Barbary sheep hunting!
