What the heck is this?

While test-fitting the Aguila 158gr .357Mag ammo in my new GP100 7-shot, I came across one round which wouldn't insert all the way. It wasn't binding with adjacent rounds, because it was the only round inserted in the cylinder at the time. It's also the only round in the box that has a problem.

On closer inspection it looks like the case is deformed at the rim end:



That little ridge right there is preventing the round from being fully inserted. Could this deformation have happened when the rim was installed? I've never seen anything like it before. All the other cartridges in the box are perfect.

 

Looks like a manufacturing defect.
Let Aguila know.

 

Will do. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this sort of thing, as uncommon as it must be.

 

The same reason that on coin collecting, mint defects are uncommon. Tjis is a mistake when the brass was drawn, or maybe canted in the loading process.

 

Maybe Aguila will replace that round with a whole new box. Wouldn't surprise me, as it's a QC issue.

Have never seen anything like that before. Kind of looks like the case got pinched somehow in the forming process. Maybe see what Aquila has to say about it.

 

It's a burr, thrown up when the rim was lathe trimmed to establish the rim thickness - the cutting tool was probably dull or damaged. It is not a safety issue, and the burr can be easily removed .

Thanks guys. Since the bullet and rim are tight, I'll just try removing the burr as suggested. The rest of the rounds in the box are perfect.

 

I would not remove the Burr and fire it anyway. That is a really BAD idea, call Aguila. If you do fire it let us know if you have a case head separation. If you don't it would be a good day to buy a lottery ticket. Never EVER fire defective ammo anyway. The ammo is cheap compared to your gun, fingers and eyes.

 

That ridge came from somewhere, the area immediately up case may be thinner than spec. You have already paid for that round, and if you shoot it, you may pay again.

 

After looking at it again, not only do I not trust myself to correctly remove the burr in the first place, I do NOT feel comfortable with shooting any blemished ammo. I called and forwarded photos to Aguila and they will be replacing the entire box and picking up the shipping cost.

 

It's a collectors item. Very rare.

That groove is suppose to be there it's an artifact of the manufacturing process when the rim is turned to the proper thickness, as PDR1 mentioned. The over-cut forming an undercut groove is on purpose to ensure there is no radius in that corner so the rounds can fully seat even with a sharp corned chamber mouth. The resulting grove (not required or present in all manufacture's cases) originally was an artifact of a common manufacturing process is now used for moonclips on revolvers that are cut for them. The problem is the burr that was turned up forward of the grove not allowing the round to chamber, probably caused by a bad cutter or the case moving axially during the cutting process. The grove itself is a non issue.

If you remove the burr with a small file the round will be perfectly safe to shoot.

 

Never ever fire defective ammo EVER.

Have similar ex here with 45 long colt lately & 30-06 years ago.
Wish I had kept up with all the notes I have on a jar of these crazies thru the
years.
Lately is the 45 LongColt Hornady which has a thick rim that I don't remember firing any different
but wouldn't go thru a resizer, then I found this one & 2 more had been in the same box.
The other is 30-06 on the left & a 30-06 on the right except the FACTORY box had 270 WIN printed
on it which was correct except the cases were stamped 30-06 & we were shooting both calibers that
day - about 12 years ago - Thank goodness my pal said the round didn't feel right, either when her ran
the bolt or closed it, he kicked it out & his wife caught it & hear the back of it. A 30-06.
I can't remember exactly how it happened, maybe the bolt wouldn't close or something but she
got a good laugh at it.
I can't get cam to do up close pics except by accident.
Front case the Hornady other is good R-P case.
