Asking for thoughts on the 938 relative to recoil vs other pocket 9mms or 380s as well as a 442/642. Any critique based on your actual experience appreciated!

I found the 938 completely unusable because the knuckle of my right hand index finger re-engaged the ambi-safety while firing.

Supposedly this can be corrected by modifying the safety or swapping in 238 or Colt parts, but I didn't feel comfortable shooting something where so little attention was paid to actual usability. What else did Sig not give a @#&$ about?

I ended up with a Ruger LC9S. I can recommend it. I also own a 640-1 and have shot plenty of 642s. Those are fine choices, but much harder to shoot accurately and you might want a reload.

My step-son has a SIG P938 and I haven't encountered any issues with it's overall design or ergonomics. Recoil can be a rather subjective matter but I have no problem shooting my slightly lighter weight Kahr CM9. Likewise recoil is more than manageable with my SIG P238, S&W Model 649, and S&W Model 638.

I've had a 938 for about a year and don't find it too 'snappy' at all, and I'm somewhat recoil sensitive (arthritis).
You should try to rent or borrow one and see for yourself.

I've not shot too many other pocket pistols (an airweight .38 snubby and a .32 Seecamp), but I found the p938 recoil easily managed, especially with the rubber grips w/finger grooves & palm swell, and the 7 rnd magazine. But with a little practice, the 6 rnd flush-fitting magazine is also pretty easy to shoot.

The single action trigger is very welcome on a small pistol like that. With so little to hang onto, a long DA trigger pull is hard for me to manage.

I actually enjoy shooting the p938, and have had zero issues with it.

I've not had any problems with the ambi safety, but I believe a non-ambi, p238 safety can be swapped in if desired.

I didn’t mind the recoil at all. The 642 is substantially worse, and cumbersome to reload. With the great sights, I enjoyed shooting the P938. I was partial to the 6 round magazines. The gun shoots almost as well as a full sized gun at 25 yards. I wound up preferring the Glock 43, which weighs the same but is slightly larger, but only because I did not think the Sig would hold up to thousands of rounds per year like the Glock.

p938sas here. I find the recoil to be quite manageable with target and defense rounds. No problems with the ambi safety, sights are quite nice. I think it shoots like a larger gun. I only have the 7rd. mags.

My 938 is a pussycat in terms of recoil with any load when compared to my S&W 442 (even when loaded with milder rounds). Plus, the sights are superb for a handgun that size ... 8 rounds of hot-stepping 9mm JHPs compared to 5 rounds of ... .38 SPL? In a package that's much flatter and even easier to conceal? Hmm.

The 938 has completely replaced my J-frames as a back-up gun, and the improvement in recoil combined with more effective ammo choices was only one of several factors.

My P938 is great to carry and easy to shoot. As it is my principle carry, I put a few rounds down range every time I am at the range to stay familiar with it. The recoil is not bad at all. Sig did a good job with this one.

I noticed this when I held one at the SIG Pro Shop. I wouldn't buy one with the Ambi safety for the same reason. You can swap it for the 238 single sided safety luckily.

I don't have the largest hands in the world, but they're not little girly-man hands either, and I've never had a problem engaging the right-side safety on my 938 Extreme during shooting. And I've shot the dickens out of this thing ... I do strictly use the extended magazine, but it looks to me that if one's using a proper grip, one should have no problems ...

Recoil is anything but harsh with my 938, the pistol has G10 grips which help a lot to tame the recoil. The safety on the right hand side would pinch my hand when wiping off, a bit of sanging on the grips at the safety cutout corrected the problem. An extended mag also helps give the hand more to grab thus helping with recoil.

I've got a P938 Extreme that's my EDC. It comes with 7 rd extended magazine and a standard 6 rd mag too. It's comfortable to shoot, reliable and accurate as long as I do my part.

FWIW, I rented one at a local range before buying mine. I highly recommend that to anyone considering this pistol or any other SAO 9mm semi-auto of similar size. It took two mags to acclimate to the size of the weapon and the trigger pull (firmer than my Gov't. and Commander size 1911s). After that, it was simply a joy to shoot.
