What to look for when inspecting a S&W 586 pre-purchase

I am seriously considering putting a S&W 586 on layaway, but I am new to revolvers and need a list of stuff to look for, and how to find it. Used is used, and this one seems to be in great shape, but I don't want any surprises. Thanks.

Of course I may still take a sharp unexpected turn at the shop and just go for the new GP100, but that gorgeous blued 586 is haunting me and has even invaded my dreams. I saw it last week and it might be gone by tomorrow. If so I'll just get the Ruger and be happy... for now

there is an outstanding sticky at the top of the revolver section

if it is a pre MIM 586...buy it.

nothing against the Ruger...but you can always buy a Ruger

Tight lock up. No or low dash/revision number. The box, tools and paperwork.

S&W makes very few carbon steel/blued guns anymore, I'd jump on it if priced right.

It is pre MIM. Priced the same as a New Ruger. And yes, I'm thinking the new Ruger will always be there.

Recall covered the no dash 586 and the 586-1. Compliance with the recall is shown is shown by an M stamped into the frame under the yoke:

A 686.

My 586 is a dog. My 686 is a sweetheart.

Hanging on to the 586 'cause someday "I'll do something about it"...but it's no fun to shoot with its scattergun accuracy and I've tried everything I can think of at the reloading bench.
